On Wednesday, September 14, Russian author, Viktor Pinchuk gave a presentation relating to his new book, Hobo Tourism at the literary festival, “CrimeaBookFest – 2022” ( ru: ??????????? – 2022). The event was hosted at the Crimean Republican Universal Scientific Library named after Ivan Franko.
The lecture was attended by listeners of different age categories. The presentation, accompanied by a demonstration of the photo and video material, lasted a little over an hour. The lecturer was asked a number of questions. The book was released in both English and Russian. Reportedly, the book’s focus is toward travelers who want to visit as many countries as possible but have modest financial means. The book discusses methods similar to the well-known, pro-Western backpacking.

On forty-five pages, the nuances of a long intercontinental trip in the hobo tour format are described in detail: overnight accommodation options (among which there are extravagant and exotic ones); use of transport; necessary equipment; food self-sufficiency advice. A separate category contains educational materials, where the creator of the textbook, using many years of experience, gives readers recommendations on how to avoid tragic mistakes in distant countries, citing specific examples from their own practice. And as an optional material, articles with a detailed description of the traveler’s expeditions are presented.
Concluding speech, the author spoke about cases from his own practice that are not mentioned on the pages of the textbook. In particular, about a two-week stay in a comfortable hotel (two swimming pools, three meals a day in a restaurant with a choice of dishes, a private room) near the city of Nadi (Fiji), where he was placed by local emigration authorities, before deportation from the island state, commenting on the events with a quote from his own book:
A paradise in which there is no way to leave the territory is a hell for a traveler. |
