Submitted by: Amy Nut

It is often difficult to keep up with the constantly changing computer technology. It seems like once you pay thousands of dollars for a computer, a newer upgraded one becomes available. This can be frustrating as well as costly since computers depreciate quickly. For this reason, computer rentals have grown in popularity. Not only do they save money, but they are convenient when traveling.

Whether traveling for business or pleasure, computers have become as natural as travel luggage. The computer that is taken on a trip is normally the lap top. If you do not have a laptop, it would be expensive to buy one just to take on a trip. When traveling, renting a laptop is a much more affordable choice.

Renting a computer for traveling has the following benefits:

In most cases, the greatest benefit you can receive from renting a computer is the free upgrades of any system type you have as well as and software programs.

You can rent a computer that will perform all of the tasks that you require. The computer will have the latest software and upgrades. You can rent as high end of a computer as you need. From a basic computer or advanced that has such features as video editing, multimedia, laptop video card, and a large hard drive with a lot of memory. You can get exactly what type of computer and features that will meet all of your business or personal needs.

A computer rental company will provide you with extra needed equipment such as light weight projectors, as printers, scanners, sound systems, and digital cameras that are all easy to carry.

Computer rental companies are flexible regarding length of the rental period. You can acquire a short term or long term rental. There is a required deposit and a rental agreement to sign.

When renting from a computer rental shop, you will save a lot of money. The shop will have all of the equipment you will require at a very affordable price. As well, many rental companies sell computers and computer products so a rental can be considered a test drive. If you like it, you can buy one just like it. As well, you can often get a great deal.

Whether traveling for business or personal reasons, a short term computer rental is an affordable solution to taking a quality and up-to-date computer on your trip. When enlisting the services of a rental company, it is important to determine what kind of computer you need as well as the specifications. Make sure that you research the computer rental shop to verify their trustworthiness and reliability. The computer rental company will assist you with all of your computer needs. Renting a computer and computer equipment from a rental company will make your trip preparation much easier and successful.

Greek lawmakers approve contentious campus police legislation

Saturday, February 13, 2021

The Greek Parliament passed contentious legislation on Thursday allowing for the creation of a campus police force and disciplinary council to end the tradition of violence at Greek universities. The decision, passed 166–132 in a parliament of 300, was opposed by many students and professors, who claim it would stifle freedom of expression.

Changes proposed included establishment of a campus police division, restriction of entry into university grounds, and formation of a “disciplinary council” empowered to suspend or expel students.

A Ministry for Citizen Protection spokesperson called university campus violence “timeless”; and said “[t]he police will drive out extremist political groups and guard the infrastructure, finally making the university a safe place”.

Prior to the vote, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the centre-right New Democracy political party which first introduced the legislation, told lawmakers “[n]owhere in the world do we see images […] of historical buildings being vandalised”.

Many incidents of unrest have occurred at Greek universities, including a 1973 student revolt at Athens Polytechnic against the 1967–1974 military junta. The government forcefully repressed the uprising, resulting in the death of at least 26. Due to another protest in 1990–91 against high school reform pushed by Mitsotakis’ father Konstantinos, one teacher died. In October, a rector was taken hostage by hooded anarchists.

In 2019, the government repealed a restriction in place since 1982 that had effectively prevented police from entering university grounds.Opponents of the introduction of police at universities have described it as stifling freedom of expression, which the government claimed is “ridiculous”. At recent demonstrations, protestors have chanted “Bread, education and freedom”, a common anti-junta slogan of the 1973 uprising. In January, Athenian police used tear gas to break up a protest which was defying lockdown restrictions.

Many Greek professors have also opposed the idea, with Professor of State Theory and Law at Panteion University Dimitris Kaltsonis claiming, in remarks to Euronews, “there is no need for special police to control the campuses”. Oxford University’s University and College Union (UCU) stated on Twitter “its solidarity to Greek colleagues […] opposing the creation of such a special university police force, which is unlikely to respond to the most pertinent problems of Greek higher education institutions”, and that the then-proposal was “alarming and not in line with best practice.”

Some recent demonstrators have called for “more doctors, fewer police”. Eurostat data from 2016–2018, which a spokesperson for the Ministry for Citizen Protection called “inaccurate”, showed Greece had the second most police officers per capita of any country in the European Union. The spokesperson said the government is “investing in the quality of education as well”, but emphasised “[p]olice on campuses is not a choice, but a necessary move”.

€23 million was recently budgeted for Greek law enforcement to better “face contemporary challenges, such as COVID-19 and external threats”.

Left-wing opposition party Syriza has criticised the legislation as an attempt to make universities “sterile and unfree”.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

US interrogators complain of “sickening” pressure for evidence on Iran

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

US interrogators have claimed that they are under pressure to find incriminating evidence against Iran when they interview Iraqi insurgents, The Observer reported on Sunday.

Micah Brose, a privately contracted interrogator working for the US military in Iraq, told the British newspaper that information about Iran is “gold”.

“They push a lot for us to establish a link with Iran (when interrogating prisoners)”, he claimed in the interview, adding that “it feels a lot like, if you get something and Iran’s not involved, it’s a let down.” He further claimed that people have said to him that “they’re really pushing the Iran thing”. Brose denied being asked to manufacture evidence, but stated that “if a detainee wants to tell me what I want to hear so he can get out of jail … you know what I’m saying.”

The US government accuses Iran of arming insurgents in neighbouring Iraq, and refuses to rule out military action against Iran for its alleged attempts to build nuclear weapons. In the past the US has been accused of using exaggerated and fabricated evidence to build its case against Iraq prior to the war.

The Observer article, which has not been picked up by any other mainstream news agency (but reported in Iran), also quoted a military intelligence officer as saying that “The message is, ‘Got to find a link with Iran, got to find a link with Iran.’ It’s sickening.”

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Canterbury farmers to get aid because of snow

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

The New Zealand government officials have announced that it will give NZ$160,000 in aid to help farmers who were affected by the huge amounts of snow in Canterbury, New Zealand two weeks ago.

The aid package will provide four regional offices for co-ordination, food supplies and ongoing support.

The Federated Farmers for mid Canterbury say that the aid will be a start to what looks like a tough winter. President of the mid Canterbury Federated Farmers Rupert Curd says, “It is too early to say exactly how much help the relief package will provide.”

The snow has not yet reached a crisis point.

The Insurance Council has estimated the cost of the snow storm has reached $35 million so far. Chief Executive of the Insurance Council says, “There has been damage to homes, commercial premises both on farms and in town and vehicles. Businesspeople who have been without power are also claiming for loss of income.”

The Minister of Agriculture Jim Anderton has said that they are not ruling out giving further aid.

ACLU President Strossen on religion, drugs, guns and impeaching George Bush

Tuesday, October 30, 2007File:Nadine Strossen 5 by David Shankbone.jpg

There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Small Fleets Your Time Has Come For Gps Fleet Tracking

Small Fleets – Your Time Has Come for GPS Fleet Tracking

by

Don Mastrangelo

Fuel prices continue to increase, and your labor costs are higher than ever. You are looking for ways to decrease costs and increase efficiencies in today’s tough market – is it finally time to install a GPS Fleet Tracking system?

I’ve been gratified and amazed time after time over the last seven years as hundreds of my customers have experienced immediate savings and control of their fleets – they all say the same thing – “…I wish I’d done this sooner!”.

When I first started installing GPS Fleet Tracking systems back at the “turn of the century” the early adopters felt like pioneers, and wanted to be the first on their block to have this cutting-edge technology. However, most Fleet Owners waited to see what would happen. They missed out while their competitors saved big. Amazingly, as of this writing less than ten percent of fleet owners have installed a GPS Fleet Tracking system. Why? Simple – too much confusion. Fleet owners are bombarded with direct mail ads and telemarketing calls from salespeople selling everything from battery operated devices to GPS enabled cell phones. An in-vehicle, real time system is the only real choice. The other systems will not give you the reliable, timely information you need and are more trouble than they are worth. Besides that, the in-vehicle solutions have become very affordable and easy to install and – most importantly – almost always pay for themselves within their first ninety days!

Is a GPS Fleet Tracking system right for your business? Try to identify areas in which you are experiencing inefficiencies or un-necessary costs where a GPS Fleet Tracking system can have an immediate and lasting impact:

1. Do your drivers take their vehicles home with them? If so, are they permitted to use your vehicles for personal use? Fleet Owners are astounded when they see immediate savings on fuel, miles driven and overtime while simultaneously reducing liability as a result of unauthorized use and speeding.

2. Are your drivers paid by the hour? Do they use a paper time card to record start and stop times? In general, I’ve learned that most employees are not “out to get” their employers, but it is hard not to fudge the time card a little. Saving only ten minutes per day of time card abuse will easily pay for your system all by itself!

3. Are you concerned that your employees are doing side jobs you are not getting paid for? With a GPS Fleet Tracking system you’ll get paid for every job performed by your assets.

4. Are you concerned about potential liabilities if your drivers are speeding or driving recklessly? With GPS you are virtually riding along with every driver, all day every day. Your drivers will know it and will think twice before putting your assets at risk!

Why not keep more of the money that is already flowing through your business! Over the past seven years I’ve learned that (understandably) fleet owners simply will not purchase a system unless they are absolutely convinced that it will save them much more than it costs. Once again, most Fleet Owners find that their GPS Fleet Tracking system pays for itself within the first ninety days.

I know, you still have some concerns about how to break the news to your drivers – that’s normal. Your employees are like your family, right? I’ve learned that your best employees will embrace the system, and yes – the ones that have something to hide will fight it. In fact, you may even lose a few people – but you’ll be better off without them.

As soon as your system is up and running you’ll kick yourself for waiting this long – but you will also be thrilled with the increase in efficiencies and decrease in costs to manage your fleet.

Freighter hits fishing boat in Gulf of Suez; thirteen dead

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

A freighter hit a fishing boat around midnight on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea. Of the 40 Egyptian fisherman on board, thirteen are dead and thirteen more missing.

Survivor Al Sayyed Mohamed Arafat told local media he jumped from the fishing boat, named Badr al-Islam, as the container ship approached. He says he hung onto a wooden crate for four hours before rescue. Local authorities have promised compensation to each survivor.

A vessel, flagged in Panama, suspected to be involved in the collision has been detained by the military. The army said yesterday one victim raised the alarm by phone and the military sent four boats and a helicopter to commence search and rescue off the Gabal al-Zayt coastline.

A plane has since joined the search. The military say the fishing boat lacked safety equipment for emergency communications.

The detained ship was found south of the Gulf, near the port of Safaga. It was carrying 220 tonnes of cargo according to the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports.
