Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

The Many Health Powers Of Inositol, Part 4

The Many Health Powers of Inositol, Part 4

by

Dr. Victor Marchione

Inositol, the focus of this new e-series, has been linked to potentially helping those who suffer panic attacks, and those who have depression. Can this natural treatment work?

Approximately 2.4 million people in the U.S. have panic disorder. As the name implies, the person with this disorder experiences a sudden episode of very intense fear, oftentimes mistaken for a heart attack. During the panic attack, a person may have these symptoms: headache; dizziness; fainting spell; nausea; sweating; rapid heartbeat; and sense of impending doom or even death; tightness in the throat or chest. These attacks usually last about 30 minutes followed by fatigue.

The exact cause is unknown, but genetics, mental or environmental stress and/or biochemical changes in brain function may be contributory factors. Medications and psychotherapy are the main forms of treatment for panic attacks.

There are two high-quality clinical studies on inositol in the treatment of panic attacks.

In one, 21 patients with panic attacks were randomized to a crossover treatment trial of 12 grams a day of inositol or placebo for a total of four weeks. Results showed that inositol reduced the frequency and severity of panic attacks with minimal side effects.

In another study, conducted in Israel, 20 patients with panic attacks received 18 grams a day of inositol or 150 milligrams of fluvoxamine a day in a randomized, crossover trial lasting four weeks. Results showed that inositol was more effective than fluvoxamine in reducing the number of panic attacks per week. Inositol dropped the number by four and the drug by 2.4. Moreover, inositol-treated patients had minimal adverse effects, whereas fluvoxamine-treated patients experienced nausea and tiredness. Now for depression, which afflicts 17 million U.S. adults. What causes depression is unknown at this time. Several contributory factors include: physical changes in the brain in depressed individuals; abnormal levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain; early trauma during childhood; loss of loved one; hereditary influence; and hormonal changes, such as those experienced during menopause.

Other than drugs, natural remedies include: electroconvulsive therapy; psychotherapy; acupuncture; the herb St. John s wort; omega 3 fatty acids; yoga; meditation; and guided imagery massage therapy.

There is early evidence from one study that shows inositol as being effective in depression. This study was conducted in Israel, with 28 depressed subjects randomized to receive either 12 grams a day of inositol or placebo for four weeks. Inositol treatment led to significant improvement in symptoms and had no negative effects on the kidney, liver or blood.

Proper Tips For Finding Student Loans

By Johnathan Cunnings

Finding loans is always hard for some people to do. Therefore, you need to know the steps that all the companies say that you should go through when you are looking for these. Knowing these steps can help you and it might even make this a bit easier and quicker to do. When you look at this, you will then find that there are plenty of tips you should know.

The first thing that you have to do before you can qualify for any loan whatsoever is that you need to fill out the Financial Aid Application. This shows the needs you have and what you are going to be able to contribute to your college education. To do this, you are going to need your parents tax information and you are going to need to fill it all out correctly. This can be done online.

The next thing that you need to do is to look around. Learn about where you can go to get loans and how to apply for them. Each loan has its own set of features that you should really know about. It’s wise to know what those things are before you go to apply for them so you know what sort of interest rates you are looking at paying and more. There is nothing wrong with being educated.

Each loan might lend you different amounts. However, some of you might have a bigger or smaller need for this. Therefore, something that you want to do would be to be sure that you can afford this. The best way to do this would be to see if you need that amount or if you can get by with less. Some of you might actually find that you actually need quite a bit more.

One thing your education might show you is that based on your credit or lack of credit for that matter, you might need a cosigner. You want to ask a person for this as this is a big step for someone to take on. Sometimes this is the best way to get the type of interest rate you are going for. We know it’s a gamble for some of you, but it is an option nevertheless.

Another tip we can give you is that there are many organizations that say they can give you free money. However, when you need it; they don’t give it. So, only go with those organizations that you trust. Go to those that you know is good for the money. This will save you tons in the long run. These are some of the tips that some of the leading companies will say if you are looking for the loans for you.

The last thing we tell people to do is that when they start looking at loans, they need to think about how they are going to pay them back. Most of them give you a grace period so that you have a bit of time before you have to start paying on them. However, you need to know how often payments are going to be.

Indian Railway: all-women crew steers Tippu Express ahead of International Women’s Day

Friday, March 6, 2020

Yesterday, an all-women crew ran the Mysuru–Bengaluru Tippu Express in the Indian state of Karnataka. The state-run Indian Railways launched this event ahead of International Women’s Day, for promoting gender equality at work places.

B Shiva Parvathi was running the train as loco pilot (locomotive pilot), and 22-year-old Rangoli Patil was her loco co-pilot. The train left Mysore Junction railway station at 11:30 am IST (0600 UTC), covering a distance of 139km to reach KSR Bangalore station. The train had banners on it which mentioned “International Women’s Day Celebration”.

Monster Pig killed by eleven-year old boy

Saturday, May 26, 2007

The mainstream press has recently uncovered the story of a wild pig, nicknamed ‘Monster Pig‘ killed on May 3, 2007, by an eleven year-old boy, Jamison Stone. The location is disclosed as a 2,500-acre commercial hunting preserve called Lost Creek Plantation, outside Anniston, Alabama.

The wild hog weighed 1,051 lbs. and was 9 ft. 4 in. from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail. The hog’s head was mounted on an extra-large foam form and measured 54 inches around the head, 74 inches around the shoulders and 11 inches from the eyes to the end of its snout. The balance of the hog is being turned into approximately 500 to 700 lbs of sausage. Jerry Cunningham, an Oxford taxidermist, said it was, “[the] Biggest thing I’d ever seen”. Wildlife specialist Dr. Jim Armstrong commented on the size said, “You might get a boar that weighs 300 or so, [Monster Pig] that’s a big pig”.

Stone said he shot the pig eight times using a Smith & Wesson Model 500 with a holographic scope and ported barrel firing 350-grain Hornady cartridges. Stone had to chase the hog for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot.

It was a pretty uneventful thing until the day after, I hadn’t seen a lot of pigs up close. I didn’t know it was a monster pig. I just knew it was as big as a cow.

The web host godaddy.com for the official web site monsterpig.com advised Stone that the number of hits totaled 1,246,464 as of Monday, May 21st.

Two previous record holders are Hogzilla a wild hog that was shot and killed in Alapaha, Georgia, on June 17, 2004, by Chris Griffin on Ken Holyoak’s farm and hunting reserve. It was alleged to be 12 feet (3.6 meters) long and to weigh 1,000 pounds (450 kg). Its weight was later determined to be closer to 800 lbs. A second involved local news media that reported on January 5, 2007, an 1,100 pound (500 kg) hog was shot in Fayetteville, Georgia. The shooter was William Corsey, who hung the specimen from a tree in his yard. A spokesperson from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said that large boars and feral hogs were common in South Georgia, but that no records are kept on them. The media latched on to the notion that this animal rivals the size of Hogzilla.

Immigration Detainees on Hunger Strike in Oxford UK

Thursday, June 15, 2006

One hundred and twenty detainees at an immigration removal centre in Oxford, UK, are on hunger strike. The protest started when some detainees refused breakfast on Wednesday 14th June 2006. A letter from the hunger strikers explaining why they are seeking to draw attention to their plight in this way has been reproduced in full below.

Those detained at the centre are mostly men who have sought asylum in the UK and whose asylum applications have been rejected. These people are then held without knowing how long they will be detained for – some end up being held for many years while awaiting deportation.

The removal centre, known as Campsfield, or Campsfield House is approximately 5 miles north of Oxford and has been in operation since 1993. It was managed on behalf of the UK Government by Global Solutions Limited, until may 2006 when it was taken on by GEO UK, the centre has a capacity of 198. Only males are detained at Campsfield.

According to the campaign group Barbed Wire Britain Over 2,600 individuals, mostly asylum seekers, are detained indefinitely in the UK without trial and with no automatic right to bail.

There have been reports in the UK press of the state taking people to detention centres without notice, in the early hours of the morning using excessively heavy handed tactics, taking children out of schools and separating families.

Many UK people and politicians express their disgust at the way detainees are treated, yet it continues. Perhaps this action by the detainees themselves will further highlight their plight and result in more UK electors writing to their MPs and demanding improvements to the way in which rejected asylum seekers are treated.

“We are detainees at Campsfield removal centre in Oxford. Most of us have been here for a long while now. There are people who have been detained for up to two years and down to three months. We are cramped in here like animals. We are treated like animals and moved around different detention centres like animals. The immigration service have taken husbands from their families and taken people who ran away from persecution in their various countries, and dumped everyone in here.

Once you are put in here the immigration service forget you. There are detainees who have applied to go back to their own countries that are still being held here for months without any news about their cases, just so that the private security companies get more money.

Detainees are asked to seek asylum and then refused. The immigration service also ask detainees to apply for bail. When you get a bail hearing date all of a sudden they serve you with removal papers that are not valid. There are many of these situations. In most cases the immigration service don’t take you to your court hearings. And then they tell the judges you refused to turn up, just so the hearing goes ahead in your absence. Many detainees have been served with removal papers and travel documents but nothing happens on the removal day.

Campsfield has become a slave house. We detainees are treated like slaves, to do odd jobs for officers. Detainees are handcuffed to see doctors or dentists in hospitals or clinic appointments. We have some racist security officers who make racist comments to detainees and go out of their way to make you feel like committing suicide. Detainees have to be at the point of death before they get to see the doctors.

The food is not worth eating. Even dogs would refuse to eat what we eat. But we don’t have a choice; every single day we eat the same food (the food we eat is rice, chicken, sandwiches, and left-over eggs)”.
