New Zealand airlines relax knife regulations

Saturday, October 1, 2005

New Zealand has relaxed the safety rules imposed on internal airlines in 2002, once more allowing passengers to carry pocket knives with blades less than 60mm long and knitting needles.

Other larger items remain banned, including ice-skates, pool cues, hockey sticks, skateboards, cricket bats and harpoons.

Other countries more at risk from terrorism such as the United States of America and Australia will maintain their stricter rules and continue to ban a range of small, sharp objects from their internal flights.

The airlines have also agreed to help return items seized from passengers before boarding.

E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced and can involve various media in the form of text, image, animation, video and audio. [1] E-learning can be considered both as an opportunity and a challenge. It provides the opportunity for teachers and Students to overcome the constraints of inadequate physical teaching resources and in many cases not enough qualified teaching staff. It is challenging for the teachers who are strict followers of the traditional way of face-to-face learning. Apart from teachers, the learners also face the challenge of learning new technology. But once learned effectively can only reap sweet fruits. As Business is facing pressures of competitive globalization, they require a sustained, rapid transformation. The revolution in the information and communication technologies also led the management to think about the change in developing their people’s knowledge base. Managing and developing people’s knowledge, skills and behavior must be at the heart of building this competitive advantage because only they can make it happen. While some organizations are still having pieces of puzzles, few have the capability to utilize the powerful INTERNET technology, which is making e-learning a key solution to achieve competitive advantage which can deliver the rapid and effective change that organizations need. Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Protests in Greece over proposed budget cuts

Monday, May 3, 2010

Widespread protests occurred Saturday against measures being enacted by the Greek government to reduce spending in order to reduce a severe debt crisis.

The capital of Athens was filled with an estimated 17,000 protesters at gatherings called by three separate political groups. During the protests, small groups of youth broke windows of several buildings, set a government press van on fire, burned trash barrels in barricades and threw rocks and firebombs at police officers.

Riot police arrested at least fourteen people and sprayed tear gas to disperse crowds. Seven policemen and two demonstrators were reported to be injured. Another estimated 5.000 people took to the streets in Thessaloniki.

The demonstrations were called to protest against government plans to cut major portions of the national budget in order to receive an estimated 120 billion euros in aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. The government formally requested the activation of the bailout plan on April 23, 2010, after the cost of borrowing funds on the open market became prohibitively high.

About 9 billion euros in Greek government bonds will come due on May 19th; without the ability to borrow from the market, government officials had to turn elsewhere. The looming deadline, in combination with the recent uncertainty of the markets over the economic stability of Greece, Portugal and Spain, has put pressure on Greek, IMF and EU negotiators to work out the final details of the aid plan quickly so that it can go into effect as soon as possible.

Among the items to be agreed upon are the exact measures the Greek government is going to put in place over the next three years to cut its debt, and the precise amount of aid it will receive in exchange. The Greek Cabinet is to meet tomorrow morning to finalize the measures before the formal announcement at noon.

The cuts in spending are expected to cut both pensions and salaries to public service workers, while raising consumer taxes. Greek unions have opposed the measures and were a major part of the protests. A nation-wide strike in protest of the budget cuts is planned May 5.

A participant in one of the protests said that “These measures are death. How people are going to live tomorrow, how they’re going to survive, I do not understand.” Alexis Tsipras, of the Coalition of the Radical Left, opposed the budget cuts, saying that “The Greek people do not owe anything to anybody. Those who have brazenly robbed public money and pension funds should pay for the crisis.”

Greece’s Prime Minister, George Papandreou, however, said that the cost-cutting measures were inevitable, and that they were essential to the survival of the country.

Restrictions imposed in China textile trade with U.S.

Saturday, May 21, 2005

In an effort to ease complaints by the U.S. and Europe about a heavy influx of low priced Chinese goods, China will raise export tariffs on 74 categories of textile products in June. This follows plans from the U.S. to impose quotas on Chinese textiles and clothing.

Products likely to see an increase from the Chinese move include synthetic fiber shirts, trousers, knit shirts and blouses, cotton shirts, and combined cotton yarn. Last week, similar restrictions were imposed by the U.S. on cotton trousers, knit shirts, and underwear. Currently, a 2.5 cent charge per item is imposed; the new tariff will raise this to the equivalent of 12 cents per piece now. While this is a fourfold increase, it is not expected to affect consumer prices. Because of this, some doubt the tariff will have any effect on correcting the trade imbalance.

This move is in response to U.S. trade quotas imposed due to concerns that increased Chinese goods would put U.S. textile manufacturers out of business. According to Auggie Tantillo, executive director of the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, a textile industry group in the U.S., the move will preserve 10,000 U.S. jobs. The new U.S. trade quota will limit the growth of Chinese textile imports to 7.5 percent compared with shipments over the past year.

Prior to January 1, a global quota system helped regulate the trade. With the quota system gone, fears have arisen that a flood of Chinese goods could undercut U.S. competitiveness in the market. China is able to market its goods cheaply due to an artificially weak yuan. The U.S. Treasury criticized the China yuan policy as “highly distortionary”, posing a major risk to China’s economy itself and to global economic growth. They challenged China to revalue its currency to bring it to a level they believe will allow fairer competition between global manufacturers.

China has disputed the charges of the U.S. Treasury. Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai said, “I believe they are not reasonable”.

Laura Jones, a representative of large retailers, also criticized the move, saying “These restrictions on imports from China will do absolutely nothing to help the U.S. textile industry — and the government knows it.”

China has seen a boom in economic growth in recent years due to growing trade surpluses with the West, but economists worry that the trade gap will cause longer term global economic problems. China’s textile and apparel exports are the most noteworthy example, with exports up over 1,000 percent in some categories this year and the rapid loss of marketshare and jobs by U.S. textile manufacturers.

Beginning in 1978, the Chinese economy has been transforming from a Soviet-style centrally planned economy to more of a free market style system, under the rigid political control of Communist Party of China.

To this end, the government has leveraged foreign trade to stimulate economic growth. The result has been a fourfold increase in GDP, making China the sixth largest economy in the world. By 2012 the People’s Republic of China may have the highest GDP in the world.

According to U.S. statistics, from 1999 to 2004 China’s trade surplus with the U.S. doubled to $170 billion. Wal-Mart is China’s seventh largest export partner, just ahead of the United Kingdom.

However, the gains from their “socialist market economy” have not been without problems. The Chinese leadership has often experienced the worst results of socialism and capitalism: bureaucracy, lassitude, corruption, and inflation. Inflation rates have been an on-going challenge, reaching as high as 17% in 1995.

Environmental deterioration is a longer-term threat to economic growth. In 1998, the World Health Organization reported that China had seven of the 10 most-polluted cities on Earth. Another concern among some economists is that China’s economy is over-heating, and due to its global economic expansion this could have major repercussions among other nations.

Typically, wages have been low and working conditions poor, with workers living in restrictive dormitories and working at boring factory jobs. However, recent labor shortages have started improving conditions, and raising the minimum wage towards the equivalent of 100-150 US dollars per month. The labor shortages are in part a result of a demographic trend caused by strict family planning.

It Services In India

We can take numerous illustration to prove dependency and commonly adaptation of digitization as a basic tool used by every sector of any nation for their growth and now, let’s take the example of the government sector. Governments are also monetizing APIs through different ways, whose purpose is not to just limited the utilities but sharing the information in a secured and useful way such as providing citizen information to banks and financial institutions, travel agencies, law enforcement agencies, visa verification agencies, etc. Hence, governments can not only offer citizen services through mobile apps but also can use the citizen data for other value added services by comply with several private enterprises or government agencies.

Now we can take the example of banks, Such as micro insurance can be a good participation opportunity between the banks and Telco’s. As we know Mobile Money provides a fully integrated system for users to make payment and transfer money in a very simple and convenient way therefore mobile money is also a good example of such partnerships. In India, Pay-TM may be a distinguished whole and may be an extremely popular digital notecase. Whereas, banks can even provide their own digital wallets because it is often straightforward for the users to control at intervals a known surroundings. And, it is also very easy and simple for the banks to link the bank accounts of every account holder with the digital wallets. Hence, payment mode of different industry brings a huge opportunity and open APIs are the key which are the base for its implementation. As every person knows that hospitality industry can tie-up with banks to supply tailored vacation packages and this may be managed through different integrated APIs.

Therefore, everyone must have to consider about finding his consequence value planning, his core proficiency and calibrating it through IT systems which are built on APIs and have to make it open APIs. And when someone say “Open API,” it means that the third party developer or organization or an individual can login to your developer portal, distinguish your APIs, sign up to it and use them without any human interference. Google, Twitter and Facebook are the initiator in the Open API world. Today, everyone can find developer.twitter.com on internet after searching on any search engine and can request there for a trial developer key and build their own app without any heavily charged as you have to need to pay them little only at the time of going live. On the internet world there are so many framework to do this. Which is the second part of the process; but, now the approach of APIs is following the self-service model and that’s the model we all have need to think about.

There is still a topic for discuss, We can still share and discuss few more examples from energy management and manufacturing sectors and can also discuss how APIs built on your IT backbone can open new revenue potential for you. Wait and put patience time will come.

Revenge killings follow shooting of Karachi politician

Saturday, August 7, 2010

Businesses remained closed for a second day on Wednesday in the Pakistani financial capital of Karachi, to mourn Raza Haider, a leading politician of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), assassinated on Monday. Nineteen people were killed on Tuesday in revenge killings, bringing the death toll to 49 over two days. Twenty-five shops and a number of vehicles including trucks and buses were burned in a series of arson attacks across the city.

Haider was gunned down while attending a funeral near the centre of the city. An officer at the Nazimabad police station said “[t]he number of attackers and the mode of their transport are not clear, but initial investigations suggest that there were more than two people who came on a motorcycle and they were probably backed by armed men in a car. They first shot at the legislator’s guard Khalid Khan and then entered the mosque and fired at Mr Haider who was in the ablution room.”

Following the first night of revenge attacks and arson the MQM accused its main political rival, the Awami National Party (ANP), of supporting the Islamist militants suspected of the assassination. The MQM is a coalition partner with the ANP in the national government and is known as a party that holds great potential for mass mobilization in the province of Sindh.

The Associated Press (AP) said that the MQM’s accusation “appeared to reflect the complex and vicious political and ethnic fault lines that crisscross Karachi.”

The AP also said that Sharfuddin Memon, the head of the Citizen’s Police Liason Committee had speculated that Haider’s killing may be related to a government operation against “land mafias”, who illegally occupy commercially valuable land. According to the AP’s report it is alleged that some of these mafias have the backing of political parties.

According to human rights organizations there have been more than 300 political killings in Karachi this year.

By Tuesday evening the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre had received 17 dead bodies and 55 injured. The head of the hospital, Dr Seemi Jamali, said that they had transfused 200 blood units to victims of targeted violence and that 31 gunshot victims had been operated upon that day.

This week’s wave of violence and attacks began with the assassination of Raza Haider, but due to the nature of Karachi politics the exact motive behind Haider’s murder is unclear. The Associated Press commented that the city has long been plagued by political violence between supporters of rival parties “that draw votes from different ethnic groups in the city of 16 million people.” The publication said this muddied the reasons for the bloodshed.

Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s Interior Minister was quoted by media as saying Islamist militants were likely suspects. He said that Haider had been on the extremist hit list. The BBC reported that they had been told by security officials in Karachi that there is evidence to suggest the assassination was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Pakistan’s deadliest militant group.

The BBC News website also reported that senior MQM leader Babar Ghauri had said: “Every MQM activist will now be looking to pay back the people involved in this heinous act”.

Raza Haider was laid to rest on Tuesday at the Martyr’s Graveyard in Azizabad, northern Karachi. Hundreds of MQM members and supporters attended to pay their final respects to Haider and to his guard Khalid Khan, also killed in the shooting. The funeral took place under tight security, and with activists raising slogans against the violence that has gripped the city.

Ukrainian tow boat ‘Chelyabinsk’ collides with bridge at Baja, Hungary

Wednesday, March 17, 2021

On Monday, Ukrainian towboat “Chelyabinsk” ((uk))Ukrainian language: ??????????? ran its barge caravan into a bridge pillar on the river Danube at Baja, Hungary. The caravan broke up, but it continued its way downstream later that day. According to multiple sources, no casualties were reported.

The caravan consisted of six grain barges pushed by Chelyabinsk, a towboat of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company. Its downstream route crossed the rail-road bridge at Baja over the Danube at about marker 1480.

The caravan moved too far left from the navigable passage and hit a pillar of the bridge around 12:54 CET (1154 UTC) while trying to turn right. Gyula Szabó, a nautical expert interviewed by TV2, attributed the event to pilot error. An eyewitness told TV2 heavy winds were a contributing factor.

The caravan broke up after the collision. Boats anchored at Baja caught the barges. A police inspection found no leaks on them and the re-assembled caravan left the scene the same day.

Talking to RTL Klub, another helmsman, Dávid Peth?, pointed out this section is hard to navigate through with this kind of setup: “[This was] a caravan of about 200 meters in length [and] 33 meters in width with a mass, together with its cargo, of about 10 thousand metric tonnes. Keeping in mind that the horizontal clearance [under] the Baja bridge averages at only 60 metres, this is very large and very bulky.” Peth? also told RTL Klub this bridge-crossing manoeuvre starts three kilometres upstream from the bridge, with no room for error.

No significant damage was reported on the bridge, and cross-river traffic did not halt. The police categorised the case as an administrative offence.

Nature Wallpaper For Computer Backgrounds

By Troy Lilly

Many who love the outdoors and the wilderness often dream throughout each day of being in their favorite places in nature. Although most of us must work full time jobs and cannot spend as much time as we would like in nature, we can surround ourselves with scenes, images and pictures of our most beloved memories.

There are many ways we can keep our passion for nature alive. But many nature lovers may not realize that several nature websites offer free nature wallpapers and backgrounds for visitors to print, share, save and display in diverse methods. So we want to give you some ideas how that you may use nature wallpaper images.

— Mobile Phone Nature Wallpaper

— Nature Screen Savers

— Printed Nature Wallpaper Murals

— Framed Art Nature Prints

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdtC0VeH5OI[/youtube]

You may wonder what the difference between a desktop background and wallpaper is. These terms may have been synonymous in the past, but since newer versions of desktop operating systems have been released (which support dynamic wallpapers and themes) these have two slightly different meanings. Background images are relatively static and do not change, and this may be the preference of the personal computer user.

Nature Desktop Backgrounds

Desktop backgrounds can have many different preferences. For instance a smaller image may be tiled where it is simply applied side by side across the computer monitor taking up the entire background of the desktop. Then another option is to use smaller images which may be centered while leaving a certain color or design on the outside of the image. One of the most popular settings is to set the background picture to take up the entire desktop background. However, many make the mistake of using a background image that is too small. So it is important to use an image that is high enough resolution to cover the resolution of your computer monitor.

Computer Nature Wallpaper

Computer Wallpaper which is not to be confused with home decorating wallpaper adds a unique personalization to desktop and laptop PCs. There are many options in the latest versions of operating systems which allow multiple wallpapers to be applied to a theme. The change frequency as well as the animated affects between changes can be customized to your own preference. As with full screen nature desktop backgrounds it is advisable to use the highest resolution image possible in order to ensure complete coverage of the entire desktop without pixilation or image distortion.

Mobile Phone Nature Wallpaper

The personalization options of mobile phones provide a custom look for backgrounds and wallpapers on these devices. Adding a nature wallpaper design to your smart phone can make your mobile device more appealing to use and to operate. This is especially appealing to those who deal with the stress of business environments and faced paced lifestyles. Just as it is important to utilize large images for desktop wallpaper, it is just as important to utilize smaller wallpaper image sizes for mobile devices whose screens are much smaller than that of a desktop or laptop PC. This will help preserve the available storage memory on your smart phone while displaying an image which is easily viewed on lower resolution screens.

Nature Screen Savers

Screen Savers have been used since the early days of PC operating systems. Screensavers were originally made because the CRT monitors would burn the desktop background into the screen producing a ghost effect which remained on the screen permanently. A screensaver which typically utilizes images that change in a random order with various animated effects prevents this ghosting issue. Today LCD and other types of monitors are more common, which are not as susceptible to monitor burning. However, the screen saver lives on which provides nature lovers a way to display their favorite nature screen saver when their desktop or laptop is idle. You may choose to pay for a nature screensaver and often paying for a screen saver will provide more options, best images and the most features.

If you do not have the extra money to pay $5, $10 or $20 for a nature screensaver (personally I would never pay more than $20 for any screensaver) then there are many free nature screensavers available at download websites. It is important however, that you make certain you download your nature screensaver from a reputable website and that you read the terms and obligations of installing ANY screensaver. Often unscrupulous software designers will install adware or spyware on your PC.

Unfortunately, practices like this are disclosed in the terms of a screensaver software install in legal mumbo jumbo which most people overlook.

Printed Nature Wallpaper Murals

What is a wallpaper mural? A mural is a large printed picture that is printed to cover an entire wall which changes the whole look of a room’s interior. This large printed nature picture will be broken up into many sections in order to be applied just as normal interior design wallpaper would be pasted or glued to a wall. In order to accomplish this you must first find a wallpaper manufacturer or custom wallpaper print shop that will print and make the wallpaper for you. This can be expensive, but does not always need be a large investment. It is important that a large enough wallpaper picture is used for the nature wallpaper mural. It is advisable that the selected image resolution at least be 21 Mega-Pixels in size in order to provide crystal clear, sharp and high quality nature wallpaper.

Once you provide this image to the custom interior design wallpaper shop they will divide the image into sections with computer software to proportion the wallpaper pieces correctly. This will certainly impress friends, family, neighbors and business clients when they see a beautiful nature scene covering the wall of an entire room.

Framed Art Nature Prints

There is no other artist such as nature and when you can find quality nature photography images to print and hang as wall art this can produce a treasured display. Artistic Nature photographers love to find unique scenes and compose the nature images to astound viewers. Nature lovers can certainly find peace and pleasure in printing a quality nature picture and either having it framed or framing the picture themselves according to their own preference. It is imperative when considering a nature picture for framed wall art that the image is of considerable quality and suitable for framing.

Most professional nature photography websites will prompt a buyer if the image selected is too small for the size the purchaser would like to buy. If you have any questions you should simply contact the nature photographer and they should be more than willing to help if they are of a reputable nature.

In conclusion while considering all of these options nature and outdoors enthusiasts everywhere can certainly find many varieties of nature wallpaper to keep their love and passion kindled. It is important however that a reputable source is located for each of these nature designs and images.

With a small amount of time and effort soon your PC, Laptop, Mobile device, Home, Office, Place of Worship and many other surroundings can be reminders of your love and desire for the most beautiful of all artistic displays, which is nature itself.
