Canadian CEO accused of fraud, suspected to have fled country

Police are now searching Canada-wide for 25-year-old Adam Spencer, a man with ties to the Oakville, Ontario and Toronto areas. He is a motivational speaker, and the founder/chief executive (CEO) of Emexis Integrated Solutions, an upstart information technology company.
First off, Spencer told investors between September 2005 and May of last year that he was making Emexis a public company, located in downtown Toronto. He allegedly took CAN$8 million from Canadian investors, defrauded 100 investors out of amounts ranging from CAN$5,000 to as much as CAN$2 million each in a couple of cases, and is on the run with their cash.
Police don’t even know if he is still in Canada. They suspect that he could be in England because he has a passport there.
Spencer travels to car race events all around the world.

Sarkozy in UK to mark historic de Gaulle war broadcast

Nicolas Sarkozy visited the UK today to celebrate the 70th anniversary since Charles de Gaulle made his war broadcast. The French president and the Prince of Wales laid wreaths at the statue of Charles de Gaulle in London.
Earlier, Mr Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni visited the BBC radio studio where the famous broadcast was made on BBC France. The broadcast at the time was said to have been listened to by a very small number of listeners. Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy unveiled a plaque and viewed a tapestry given to the BBC by France as a note of gratitude after World War II.
Nicolas Sarkozy and British PM David Cameron met with 200 veterans during a ceremony at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Nicolas Sarkozy awarded the Légion d’honneur to six World War II veterans, three of whom were British.
In a short speech, Mr Cameron said the anniversary was a “reminder that Britain and France are not just neighbours in the geographical sense but also in the emotional sense.” Mr Cameron held an hour of talks with the French president at Downing Street primarily focusing on economics, Afghanistan, and other foreign policy matters. The visit is the first by a French president to mark Gen de Gaulle’s broadcast on June 18, 1940. In the stirring radio appeal, Gen de Gaulle declared himself leader of the “Free French”, spawning the French Resistance, which went on to play a crucial role in defeating the Germans.
Mr Sarkozy’s last official visit to the UK was in March 2008, when he was also accompanied by his wife.
Podolski plays his last international match; scores the winner

On Wednesday, Poland-born German football player Lukas Podolski played his last international game, a friendly match, against England at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. 31-year-old Podolski, who announced retirement in August, scored the only goal of the match.
Before the match started, Podolski received a bouquet from Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB — German Football Association) president Reinhard Grindel. Podolski netted his 49th international goal in the 69th minute — a 25-yard screamer from Toni Kroos’ assist. In this match, Timo Werner became the 87th player to debut under Germany’s manager Joachim Löw. The Germans also set a new team record of most consecutive clean sheets, seven, as FC Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen was guarding the German net. Mesut Özil received Germany’s player of the Year for 2016 recognition.
Before the match, Podolski said, “Thank you for thirteen years of having the eagle on the chest. Thank you to everyone. Thank you to my family and my parents. Thank you Dortmund. Thank Köln and thank you Germany!” Podolski immigrated to Germany at the age of two “with basically only a football under my arm”, as he put it in August. He earned his 130th international cap on Wednesday. Podolski is Germany’s third all time most capped player after Lothar Matthäus and Miroslav Klose and is the third top-scorer for Germany.
Podolski debuted for Die Mannschaft thirteen years ago in 2004. Since then, the forward has made appearance in seven major tournaments, and won the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Podolski was the fifth player to retire from Germany’s 2014 World Cup squad. Before him, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Miroslav Klose, and Per Mertesacker hung up international boots.
Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.
If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.
There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”
There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Police shoot dead suspect in Copenhagen attacks

Police in Denmark have shot dead a man they believe was responsible for two gun attacks that killed two people in Copenhagen yesterday. Police had kept a property in the Nørrebro district of the city under surveillance. When the man returned to the property, they confronted him and shot him in the ensuing fire fight.
Jorgen Skov, a police investigator, said “nothing at this point suggests there were other perpetrators” than the man shot today. Yesterday, he was allegedly involved in two shooting incidents in the city.
The first shooting took place in a café at the Krudttoenden cultural center which was hosting a discussion about blasphemy and free speech, relating to the attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris. Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who organised the meeting, was subjected to death threats following publication of a number of drawings of the Prophet Muhammad. Vilks’ website says the event was timed to coincide with the fatwa placed on the British novelist Salman Rushdie. The event also hosted Inna Shevchenko, an activist with the feminist protest group FEMEN.
François Zimeray, France’s ambassador to Denmark, attended the event. He told reporters: “They shot from the outside [and] had the same intention as Charlie Hebdo, only they didn’t manage to get in[…] Intuitively I would say there were at least 50 gunshots, and the police here are saying 200. Bullets went through the doors and everyone threw themselves to the floor.”
The second attack yesterday took place outside a synagogue in the Krystalgade area of Copenhagen. The attacker shot and killed, according to the local Jewish community, Dan Uzan, a 37-year-old Jewish man who was volunteering as a security guard outside the synagogue while a bat mitzvah service was held inside.
Following the attacks, police released a description and photo of the suspect: he was depicted wearing a black puffer jacket, carrying a black bag, wearing a maroon balaclava, aged between 25 and 30 with a black automatic weapon. The chief police inspector Torben Molgaard Jensen told reporters: “We assume that it’s the same culprit behind both incidents.”
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the Danish Prime Minister, said yesterday: “We feel certain now that it’s a politically motivated attack, and thereby it is a terrorist attack.”
Lars Vilks in a statement to Associated Press said he believed the first attack was directed at him: “What other motive could there be? It’s possible it was inspired by Charlie Hebdo”.
World leaders have condemned the shooting. French President François Hollande described the attacks as “deplorable” and promised the Danish “full solidarity of France in this trial”. British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: “I condemn the shootings in Copenhagen. Free speech must always be protected.” British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Sickened by shooting at free speech event in Copenhagen. My thoughts are with the people of the city and country.”
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the Australian government “condemns the shooting at a free speech event in Copenhagen overnight” and “[t]he thoughts of all Australians are with the people of Denmark and, in particular, the family of the victim who lost his life and the police officers injured in this brutal act of terror. As with the Charlie Hebdo atrocity in Paris, the Copenhagen attack is an affront to one of our most fundamental values — freedom of speech. We stand with the people and government of Denmark in confronting this cynical attempt to undermine that fundamental right.”
