Digital security researchers publicly reveal vulnerability in WPA2 WiFi protocol

Thursday, October 19, 2017

On Monday, digital security researchers Mathy Vanhoef and Frank Piessens of Belgium’s KU Leuven university publicly disclosed a security vulnerability in the WPA2 Wi-Fi (wireless local-area networking) protocol, which they called KRACK (for Key Reinstallation Attack). Their study claimed KRACK affects every modern device using Wi-Fi; it can be fixed by a software update, researchers said.

Vanhoef wrote, “Attackers can use this novel attack technique to read information that was previously assumed to be safely encrypted. This can be abused to steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, chat messages, emails, photos and so on.” Vanhoef notified vendors about the flaw in July, including UNIX-like operating system OpenBSD. “If your device supports Wi-Fi, it is most likely affected. […] In general, any data or information that the victim transmits can be decrypted”, he wrote.

The study papers, which were submitted for review on May 19, were kept in confidence allowing companies to fix the security flaw. The United States-based Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) informed vendors on August 28. The Wi-Fi Alliance said it “could be resolved through a straightforward software update.” OpenBSD released their software patch on August 30.

Exploring the flaw which affected every device the researchers had tested, National Cyber Security Centre of the UK said “the attacker would have to be physically close to the target”. But due to this flaw, an attacker can send malware or ransomware on the websites, Vanhoef claimed.

Linux-based operating systems including Android v6.0 and higher are especially affected by this flaw, while Windows and iOS are not as vulnerable as Android by this flaw as they do not fully implement WPA2.

Microsoft reportedly has released security patches for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. Google said Android operating systems would receive the updates in the software update scheduled to be made available on November 6. Apple has implemented the patch in the beta versions of their operating system iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS, however it is yet to roll out patches for stable operating systems.

WPA2 protocol has been used for more than a decade, and has been compulsory for Wi-Fi since 2006. KRACK would also affect various home appliances which can be controlled over Wi-Fi, within the so-called “Internet of things”. Andrew Martin from Oxford University said, “We can be sure a lot of these devices won’t be patched[…] Whether that matters for this attack or only for some future attack is yet to be seen.”

The study and its findings are scheduled for presentation at the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Computer and Communications Security conference on November 1.

The Value Of Galvanized Bolts

byPalm Beal

There are many different bolts in New York City; everything from Anchor bolts to Toggle bolts and everything in between. In many cases these bolts are available in various finishes and even materials; it is not uncommon for bolts to be made from stainless steel or to be galvanized when the operating environment is harsh. The special material or the special coating prevents corrosion and in the case of steel bolts; rust. Galvanized bolts are used in many applications, from the extreme demands that are found in bridge construction to the less demanding need when used to build your deck at home.

Galvanized bolts in New York City begin as nothing more than a steel bolt. This bolt, as it is unprotected will begin oxidizing very quickly, especially when they are exposed to moisture. Many of these bolts are subjected to a downstream application of zinc plating which adds potentially years to the life of the bolt and improves the load bearing capacity. A galvanized bolt can be used in far more applications then the plain steel fastener it once was.

It is very easy to identify a bolt which has been galvanized or hot zinc plated, they have a very definitive spangled surface. Although they can be employed anywhere, they are usually used outside where the fastener is constantly subjected to the weather and the environmental conditions prevalent in the area. They are common in areas which are close to the coasts as they can resists salt spray induced corrosion, although not as good as stainless steel bolts and nuts. In many industries where chemicals are processed, galvanized bolts are specified for almost every application.

Bolts in New York City are classified into through bolts and lag bolts. A lag bolt is used when there is no accessibility to both the bolt side and the nut side. A through bolt, or carriage bolt on the other hand is used when the bolt goes completely through the materials and the threads show on the other side of the joint. Lag bolts are often used when fastening wood, carriage bolts are the favorite for fastening metal.

Galvanized bolts are somewhat more expensive to purchase than plain, un-plated bolts but their proven life expectancy is many times greater so their use greatly reduces down time and maintenance expenses. For more information, visit the website http://ekfastener.com/.

iPad 2 goes on sale in United States

Sunday, March 13, 2011

The new version of Apple Inc.’s tablet computing device, the iPad 2, has gone on sale in the United States at Apple Stores and a number of other retailers (including Wal-Mart, Target, Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Verizon, and AT&T), a shift from last year’s launch which was only available through Apple’s stores. The product will go on sale internationally on March 25.

The device was announced on March 2 at an event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. CEO Steve Jobs emerged from sick leave to make the announcement.

The iPad 2 has an all-new design and has several improvements over the original iPad. The device runs on a dual-core Apple A5 CPU. According to Jobs, the CPU’s new dual-core capability enhances multitasking and doubles the processing speed. Apple additionally introduced a magnetic ‘Smart Cover’ accessory that snaps to the front screen of the device along with several new apps ported from the Mac OS X operating system and the iPhone. These include iMovie, GarageBand, and Photo Booth. The new iPad introduces front and rear cameras which enable FaceTime and video. The new tablet is fifteen percent lighter and 33 percent thinner than the previous version—thinner than an iPhone 4—and has beveled edges. It is available in black and white and continues to be capable of ten hours of battery life on a single charge.

The announcement came after months of rumors about the successor to the original iPad. Competitors have designed tablets to compete with the iPad, such as Motorola’s Xoom powered by the Android operating system. Apple, who normally follows a yearly product cycle, has pressed its iPad successor into the marketplace almost a full month earlier than usual.

Tablet computers have existed for years but, until recently, have not been popular amongst consumers. Tablet sales totaled 90,000 in 2009. Apple sold nearly fifteen million iPads worldwide in 2010, generating US$2 billion in revenue within three months. In 2010, Apple held a 75% share of the tablet computer market. According to one analyst, even with competition, iPads will still make up at least 20 million of the more than 24 million tablet computers sold in the United States in 2011. An analyst predicted ‘conservatively’ that 35 million iPad 2s will be sold in 2011. One analyst credits Apple’s enormous App Store for the iPad’s continued domination. Apple also holds an advantage in price over other tablets, many of which are still first generation devices. An analyst at J.P. Morgan predicts an overabundance of tablets caused by faltering demand. This could have drastic effects on competitors.

The iPad connects to the Internet over Wi-Fi and 3G models of the new device can connect to the wireless networks of AT&T or Verizon Wireless. The iPad 2 will start at US$499—the same starting price of the original iPad. The equivalent model of the original iPad has been reduced to US$399.

Breast Augmentation And The Dangers Of Capsular Contracture

By Abigail Aaronson

One of the biggest and aesthetically unpleasant risks of breast augmentation is capsular contracture, also known as “breast squeeze”. Few women are aware that this is one of the major risks of undergoing augmentation surgery. This condition is generally not a severe health risk; however, it does create emotional distress due to the displeasing aesthetic appearance it creates.

Capsular contracture can occur shortly after surgery or develop over a longer period of time. The condition is characterized by the breast implant appearing “squeezed” and unnatural. Capsular contracture is the result of the tissue surrounding the area attacking the implant as if it were a foreign substance.

The breast may become overly hard and in severe cases discomfort and pain can even extend into the armpit. In the vast majority of capsular contracture cases, women feel little to no pain, but rather feel more emotional distress over the aesthetically displeasing appearance.

There is no clear indication of what triggers capsular contracture in certain women; although there are many theories and potential threats. Women who have a tendency to develop keloids, which are discolored, abnormally thick and raised scar tissue that can expand over a healing wound, may be at a greater risk than others. Some surgeons also believe that the placement and type of implant device may increase the likelihood of developing capsular contracture, although research is not conclusive.

The only way to successfully battle capsular contracture is through revision augmentation surgery. For the revision surgery, it is not uncommon for a different incision site to be used in order to get maximum results, which may mean an extra set of scars. Fortunately, revision surgery to repair capsular contracture has a fairly high success rate.

Some surgeons may suggest to adjust the placement of the implants or to switch types in order to combat potential future development. Recovery from revision surgery is generally less painful and quicker than primary breast augmentation, so it won’t be too physically taxing.

There is no cure or known way to prevent capsular contracture from initially occurring or even recurring after revision breast augmentation. Your plastic surgeon may be able to suggest a few methods such as post-surgery breast massage to help prevent potentially developing the condition. Many of these practice methods might have a positive effect, but otherwise will cause no further damage or harm to the breast implants.

Besides capsular contracture, women should be aware of all other potential dangers and risks that can occur during and after breast augmentation. Bleeding, extended swelling and bruising, skin necrosis, and permanent or temporary numbness are all risks. Another common problem is implant ruptures and leaks.

Saline ruptures can be detected within hours and the solution is absorbed harmlessly back into the body. Leaks in silicone implants, however, can take years to notice if at all. They can often only be detected by MRI scans, so it is recommended to have one performed every few years to ensure your health and safety as silicone can potentially harm surrounding tissues.

Euro reaches new lows

Friday, July 15, 2011

On Tuesday, the Euro fell to a new record low in relation to the Swiss Franc, and to multi-month lows against the U.S. Dollar and Japanese yen; all considered by investors to be safe currencies during times of economic turmoil.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that recent comments from the newly installed head of the International Monetary Fund, France’s Christine Lagarde, resulted in a sell-off of the Euro. At a roundtable discussion in Washington, Lagarde noted that the IMF had not yet reached discussion of terms and conditions of a second Greek bailout plan. In fact, a representative from the IMF is currently meeting with Eurozone policymakers to draft such a new proposal. The yield differential between Italian bonds and German bonds has spread to more than 300 basis points, something not seen in over a decade and evidence of investors’ concern.

Adding to the Euro’s woes is the upcoming release of the bank stress tests on Friday. The European Bankers Association said that they expect the data release to shed new light on the Eurozone’s banking situation. Representatives of several of the Eurozone’s governments, including Germany, have requested that the association consider releasing fewer specific details for fear that investor panic will ensue. The inadequacy of the capitalization rates has been an issue with the European Central Bank, whose president recently called upon Eurozone banks to make every effort to put their balance sheets in order.

For the time being at least, an unsubstantiated rumor reported by the Wall Street Journal states that the Eurozone’s central banks’ purchase of periphery debt has helped to quell the downward momentum of the Euro.

Impact Of Gst On E Commerce}

Impact of GST on e-commerce

by

Rupal Agarwal

Let us look at some of the crucial features and implications of GST affecting the e-commerce sector.

Introduction of TCS (Tax Collected at Source)

With the rolling out of GST, e-commerce retailers will have to collect a TCS at the rate of 2% per transaction from the payments to be made to the vendors and suppliers of goods sold to customers. The TCS will not be applicable to aggregators like OLA, Uber, and MakeMyTrip etc. TCS will also not be applicable on goods which are returned by customers as there is no sale. Implementation of TCS will have implications for both the e-commerce entities and their suppliers.

1. Additional compliance

With TCS, now e-commerce entities will have to furnish returns and details (on a monthly basis) of all the TCS collected from the suppliers by the 10th of next month. This has to be done in the prescribed formats within the prescribed deadline. For example, the amount of TCS collected during the month of August will necessitate that the returns for the same be filed by 10th September. Similarly, the suppliers will also have to furnish their TCS details. Eventually, records received from both the parties will be reconciled by the tax authorities.

2. Working capital factor

Small scale vendors are allaying fears that with TCS in effect, a substantial amount of working capital would get blocked for a period of 20-50 days which could affect the inventory levels maintained by them and their spending on revenue expenditure.

3. No impact on price

TCS will have no effect on the price of the goods sold because suppliers can offset this TCS deducted by the e-commerce entities against the tax payable by suppliers in the form of tax credit.

Compulsory registration

Now, every supplier or vendor of goods operating via the e-commerce route will have to compulsorily register with concerned authorities. The minimum threshold limit will not be applicable in this case.

There could be perceptive barriers about this registration process but it appears to have many long term benefits. It gives the small and medium businesses an opportunity to be a part of the rapidly growing organized retail sector and make their existence matter in policy-making (to avail tax benefits, credit schemes etc).

Standardization of taxes

In the present indirect tax regime, the VAT charged on same goods varies from state to state. Similarly, the octroi tax rates also vary. The resultant effect is disparities in the price of the same goods across the country. GST aims to do away with these variations by adopting a One India One Tax policy. GST aims to address these inter-state variations in the state level taxes (as there will be a standard taxation structure for indirect taxes). This would remove or at least narrow down the disparities in the selling prices of same goods across the country.

Interstate movement of goods

Currently, the goods passing from one state to another are subject to several taxes like octroi, CST, VAT etc. The procedural bottlenecks make it a difficult experience for suppliers and e-commerce companies to procure goods from another state or cater to markets outside the home state. With the proposed new system, as various existing indirect taxes are integrated into one taxing structure, the inter-state movement of goods is expected to improve to a considerable extent.

Increased competition

The e-commerce companies are not the only ones to benefit from the improved facilitation of inter-state movement of goods. The physical store retailers would too benefit from it. With GST in place, it is expected that inter-state procurement of goods will see a rise and retailers will aim to capitalize on newer markets outside their home state. The reduced tax burden (because of GST) will also enable the retailers to compete more fiercely with the e-commerce companies in terms of the product line and product pricing, especially in the local markets.

Discounts

In the present system, there are some ambiguities regarding the taxation of the discounts offered by the e-commerce companies. The GST will be applicable on the transaction value and any discount offered will have to be explicitly mentioned in the invoice. However, if the discount is offered after the sale or is not explicit, it will be subject to GST.

On a concluding note, GST seeks to overhaul the existing indirect tax regime and replace it with an integrated version towards a One India One Tax system. It will also bring more clarity and transparency in the applicability of rules and regulations pertaining to indirect taxes in India.

It looks as if the e-commerce sector will undergo a phase of change as GST seeks to streamline the taxation structure. The TCS part might be considered for a revision which we will have to wait and watch in the coming weeks.

Ian Thorpe starts to recover from chest pains

Friday, March 3, 2006

Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe is reported to be feeling much better after suffering from chest pain for some time.

The Olympic gold medalist was due to swim in the 100m and 200m freestyle and in three relays at the Commonwealth Games, but due to his complaints his fitness has been in doubt. He has been unable to take the drugs needed to overcome his pain as they are banned from the Games.

Thorpe told the media Thursday “It’s actually the best I’ve felt in a while; the antibiotics are starting to work.”
