Doors For All Seasons}

Doors for All Seasons

by

Eric SlarkowskiInstalling a new door can make a big difference to the interior or the exterior of a home. If you think that painting your existing door will not improve the door enough for you, then a new door is a wise investment. Many people also replace their doors when they are drafty, badly insulated, or do not fit properly into the door frame. A high quality new door can lower the costs of heating or cooling your home because it probably has better insulation than your old door. Vintage doors are often made of cheap materials like plywood, while today’s doors are better made, although you may end up paying more dearly for them. For instance you can pay five hundred dollars for a new front door, but the door is usually reinforced with metal for safety reasons.

The three kinds of doors are interior doors (which more often than not do not have locks on them), entry doors (extremely sturdy doors with safety measures to keep out burglars and other undesirables), and combination doors such as storm or screen doors. Installing doors is a project that you can probably do by yourself, although sometimes it is a two-person job if the door is especially heavy. Usually one person needs to hold the door up while the second person takes it off its hinges.

Doors can be purely functional, purely decorative, or a little of both. For instance, many people have front or entry doors with decorative windows cut out of them. Stained or marbled glass is a popular addition to front doors with cutouts

. Some people have a front door of solid wood, but then put a decorative storm door outside of that to keep their house well insulated. Then they can leave the solid door open during the day and admire the view through the storm door.

You can usually buy doors in standard sizes for your doorframe. Only rarely will you have to cut them to the right size. If there is a special kind of wood you would like to use however, or want to save yourself some money, you can order wood from a lumberyard to your specifications. Make sure you take precise measurements of the old door before you order.

A new door requires handles a door set. You can buy a kit at a hardware store to install on your door or get a professional to do it. The most important thing to remember when installing your door kit is to make sure everything measures up properly. You need to set your hinges before you drill a hole in your new door. Once you make sure everything is aligned in high fashion, then you can install your door kit. The door should close all the way when you are done, or you have done something wrong. Sometimes you might just have to adjust the screws in the hinges to fix the problem. Other times, you may need to cut a sliver off the door.

NYC transit deadline past, no strike or talks

Friday, December 16, 2005

Talks between the MTA and Transit Workers Union Local 100 (TWU) ended this morning at 06:00 EST (11:00 UTC) with no resolution or job action. The latest offer in the now bitter negotiation was from MTA: 3% pay increases per year in a three-year contract with changes in the health benefits and pension plan for new employees.

In a 12:30 EST (17:30 UTC) press conference, MTA President Peter Kalikow told the press that this would be the final offer the MTA would make because “there is no more.” Kalikow continued that the MTA would be in dire straits in 2008 if they were to accept the TWU’s demands, which included a 24% pay increase over three years and a reduced co-pay towards employees’ health care premiums. He continued, “if they [the TWU] don’t accept it, we will go to binding arbitration. This is our last offer.”

Although most New Yorkers were geared up for a strike when the contract expired at 00:01 EST (05:01 UTC), the subways and busses continued to run their routes. An AP report, later confirmed by the TWU, calls for a limited strike with two deadlines: One at 00:01 EST Monday for the Jamaica and Triboro bus lines, and one at 00:01 EST Tuesday for MTA subways and busses.

Because they are run by private companies, a strike by the Jamaica and Triboro bus employees would not be subject to New York’s Taylor Law, which prohibits public employees from striking and fines strikers two times their salary for each day the strike lasts.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg commented that had the union begun its strike this morning, it would not have been as “damaging” as a Tuesday-morning strike. He also added “I thought that the MTA offer was more generous than what the municipal emplyees get offered.” Governor George Pataki reminded the union that the Taylor Law would be applied: “As I said yesterday, I have three words for the TWU: ‘Don’t do it.’ If you strike, there will be very real consequences.”

No talks were held today. Bargaining sessions are scheduled to resume tomorrow morning at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Manhattan.

Pipe bomb found near nuclear power plant in Arizona

Friday, November 2, 2007

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Arizona is currently locked down while security teams are doing a sweep of the area after a pipe bomb was found this morning.

Arizona Public Service Company (APS) spokesman Jim MacDonald said a contract worker was stopped at the main gate of the facility for a routine security sweep and a suspicious looking device was reportedly found in the bed of the worker’s pickup truck. APS owns the station, which is located in Wintersberg, Arizona.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the suspicious looking device was a pipe bomb.

“MCSO bomb squad tests later determined that the capped pipe was a credible explosive device,” said APS in a written statement.

The worker was taken into custody, and the entrance to the plant was immediately closed. The suspect, only described as a white male, lives in a Phoenix apartment complex, is reportedly an engineer who works with computers, and is cooperating with police.

Three schools in the Saddle Mountain Unified School District were locked down voluntarily, affecting about 1,500 students.

According to Fox News, the Department of Homeland Security‘s operations center was monitoring the incident.

MacDonald said the plant nor the public are at risk, “We have a large and well-trained security force that followed the procedures exactly the way they’re supposed to.” The incident, which was classified as an “unusual event” — the lowest emergency classification, is not believed to be terrorist related.

The FBI and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.

The Palo Verde plant is about 35 miles west of Phoenix and is the largest nuclear electric generating site in the country, producing as much electricity as nine Hoover Dams.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Dukan Diet Mega Weight Loss Diet By French Doctor

By Dominique Scott

Do you want to lose a lot of weight fast? If you haven’t tried the Dukan Diet, you must check out this article. Developed by acclaimed French doctor Pierre Dukan, this diet was just released outside of France after much popularity in France over the last decade.

The Dukan Diet has proven successful for both those just a few pounds to lose and for those who want to lose a lot of weight fast. Dr. Pierre Dukan reports that weight gain is a result of how many fat cells we have. When you overeat, at a certain point fat cells grow big enough that if the unhealthy cycle isn’t stopped, the cells then split into two, creating more fat cells. This of course makes dieting and weight loss more difficult. After working with thousands of patients, Dr. Dukan created the Dukan Diet to help people with all different body sizes and shapes to be able to lose pounds and maintain weight loss.

The Dukan Diet works to attack weight loss with an intense and restrictive diet in the beginning stages. However, the diet gradually works into something that you can maintain for life to keep the weight off. It is a four-phase program that with initial dramatic weight loss, encourages continued dedication. In his ten years working with patients, Dr. Dukan reported that this worked both for people who were obese and those who wanted to shed a few pounds to get to their ideal weight. You can tailor the time in each phase to your individual needs to reach your goal weight.

The Dukan Diet is laid out in four distinct parts or phases: the attack phase, the cruise phase, the consolidation phase and the stabilization phase. The diet requires discipline and takes some adjustment but if you do stick with it, you can lose weight very quickly. The Dukan Diet isn’t a crash diet– it’s a plan for life. Pierre Dukan focuses heavily on maintenance. He notes that the problem with most diets is getting through that critical period following initial weight dramatic loss where many people falter and gain back any weight they’ve lost

During the attack phase of the Dukan Diet, you stick to an all-protein diet. The emphasis on protein sounds like the popular Atkin’s Diet. However, unlike the Atkin’s plan, you aren’t consuming fatty protein with cheese, butter and as much fat as you desire. Dukan instructs that fat is to be trimmed off of beef and other meats, and the skin to be removed from chicken. The first portion of the diet can be done for anywhere from one to ten days, depending on how many pounds you want to lose. To drop more weight rapidly, continue this attack phase of the diet for as long as desired.

The second phase of the Dukan Diet is the cruise phase. Dieters continue to lose pounds during this phase but not at the accelerated rate of the first phase. You will alternate your protein-only days with protein and vegetable days. You must avoid starchy vegetables- most green vegetables can be enjoyed without restriction during this phase on vegetable days. You can expect to lose approximately 2 pounds per week during the cruise phase of the diet. You stay in this phase alternating protein and protein/vegetable days until you reach your goal weight. Stay in the attack phase for a longer time before starting this second phase of the diet if you want to continue to lose weight rapidly. Then, stay in the cruise phase until you reach your weight loss goal. Keep reading for direction on the third and fourth phases.

During your Dukan Diet, the doctor advises low impact exercise like walking for 25 minutes each day. Adequate hydration is also important and getting enough water is imperative.

Does this diet sound like one you want to try? If you could lose 20, 30, 40 pounds or more and keep it off it might be worth it right? Dr. Dukan has tons of patients thrilled with their weight loss results on the Dukan Diet. More and more people are getting excited about the possibility of quick weight loss with long-term results now that Pierre Dukan’s Diet is now gaining popularity outside of France.

The third and fourth phases are incredibly important to the success of your weight loss maintenance. Dukan noted that most dieters have problems in this stage of their weight loss. You’ve lost the major weight you want to lose and now you want to re-enter your normal life and routine. What do you do? Dukan has a method for this.

Glenbard East defeated by Benet Academy in Illinois basketball sectional

Monday, March 15, 2010

Benet Academy Redwings 68 54 Glenbard East Rams

Top-seeded Glenbard East High School was expected to win the Class 4A Neuqua Valley High School Sectional championship on Friday night. Yet with a lot of determination and a strong defense, the Benet Academy varsity boys basketball team defeated the Rams 68–54.

The game marks Benet’s sixteenth straight victory this season, giving the Redwings a 26–3 overall record. It is also their first sectional championship since the 1982–1983 season, which was the last time Benet advanced to the Class AA state tournament; there they lost to Thornton Township High School in the quarterfinals.

The Redwings’ aggressive man-to-man defense certainly kept the Rams out of their comfort zone amidst the crowds in the sold-out Neuqua gym. As Benet forward Mike Runger said, “We made them play to their weaknesses instead of letting them get comfortable doing what they want to do.”

Benet scored 71 percent of its shots in the first half, while Glenbard East scored only 27. While the Rams led twice in the first few minutes (3–0 and 7–5), the Redwings led 12–7 after the first quarter. A three-point shot made by Dave Sobolewski two seconds before the buzzer gave Benet a 27–16 lead at the end of the first half.

Glenbard East desperately attempted a comeback in the second half, but Benet maintained a lead ranging from 10 to 18 points. Rams guard made four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, but to no avail. As Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said, “…we knew they were going to come at us and give us a ton of pressure. We were a long, long way from being comfortable at halftime.”

Benet will play Simeon Career Academy from Chicago in the supersectionals at Hinsdale Central High School on Tuesday night.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Australia’s Old Parliament House becomes heritage listed

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced on Tuesday that Old Parliament House in Canberra has been heritage listed. It is the 31st entry on the National Heritage List.

The listing acknowledges the role the building has in shaping Australia’s culture and protects it from being modified in any way which could affect its historic value.

Old Parliament House served as the home of Australia’s parliament from 1927 until 1988, when it was relocated to the present parliament house. From 1901-1927, parliament met in Melbourne in the Victorian Parliament House (the state parliament was relocated for 26 years). Before being known as Old Parliament House, the building was known as Provisional Parliament House – as it was intended to be used for 50 years before a permanent building could be built.

In the 61 years the building was used as the seat of parliament, the government changed only seven times, and several new political parties were formed (the Liberals, Anti-Communist Labor Party, and the Australian Democrats).

Mr Howard said the building played an important part in Australia’s political history. “Old Parliament House will always be an important part of our political history with its rich collection of original furniture, art and memorabilia helping to illustrate the story of Australia’s political customs and functions,” he said.

According to Mr Howard, the National Heritage List lists sites which have helped shape the country. “The National Heritage List contains places that have played an important role in the development of our nation, such as Captain Cook’s landing place in New South Wales, Port Arthur in Tasmania and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra,” said the Prime Minister.

The building currently houses Australia’s National Portrait Gallery, and serves as a venue for receptions and exhbitions.

The Versatility Of The Backhoe Loader

The Versatility of the Backhoe Loader

by

drbob

Also referred to as a loader backhoe, the backhoe loader is the most useful piece of construction equipment due to its versatility. It consists of a tractor, front bucket loader and a small backhoe in the rear end. Due to the small size and versatility, backhoe loaders are common with small construction projects and excavation type work.

Originally invented in Burlington Iowa back in 1857, the backhoe loader is the most common variation of the classic farm tractor. As the name implies, it has a loader assembly on the front and a backhoe attachment on the back.

Anytime the loader and backhoe are attached it is never referred to as a tractor, as it is not normally used for towing and doesn’t normally have a PTO.

When the backhoe is permanently attached, the machine will normally have a seat that can swivel to the rear to face the backhoe controls. Any type of removable backhoe attachments will normally have a separate seat on the attachment itself.

Backhoe loaders are common and can be used for many tasks, which include construction, light transportation of materials, powering building equipment, digging holes and excavating, breaking asphalt, and even paving roads.

You can often replace the backhoe bucket with other tools such as a breaker for breaking and smashing concrete and rock. There are some loader buckets that offer a retractable bottom, which enable it to empty the load more quickly and efficiently.

The retractable bottom loader buckets are often times used for grading and scratching off sand. The front assembly on a backhoe may be either removable or permanently attached. Often times, the bucket can be replaced with other tools or devices. In order to mount different attachments to the loader, it must be equipped with a tool coupler. The coupler consists of two hydraulic cylinders on the end of the arm assembly, which can expand and retract to allow different tools to be attached to the unit.

Common with excavating jobs, the backhoe can serve many purposes. It can haul equipment and supplies in the loader bucket. Another great use is to cover up dirt when filling in trench lines or covering up pipe that was just put in the ground. The backhoe attachment at the rear is ideal for digging trenches for water and sewer pipes.

There are several popular backhoe loader manufacturers, including Case, Caterpillar, John Deere, New Holland and several foreign made backhoe loaders are becoming increasing popular including Kubota and Komatsu. The newer backhoe loaders offer air conditioning, radios, and other accessories that permit you to work in relative comfort.

The best thing about the backhoe loader is the fact that they are easy to operate. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to fully operate this nifty piece of equipment. To learn more about backhoe loaders visit

Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up airliner

Sunday, December 27, 2009

U.S. authorities have charged Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab with trying to blow up a plane on its descent into the city of Detroit, Michigan on Friday. The man, who comes from a prominent Nigerian family, was read the charges in a hospital Saturday, where he is being treated for burns.

The charges were read by United States District Judge Paul Borman while Abdulmutallab was being held at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Abdulmutallab was asked if he understood the charges against him, and he answered in English that he did. Witnesses reported he was in a wheelchair with a blanket over his lap.

The U.S. government accuses the Nigerian national of bringing an explosive device onto Friday’s Northwest Airlines Flight 253 plane from Amsterdam in the Netherlands. A preliminary analysis by federal authorities indicates he used a syringe to detonate a highly explosive substance, identified as PETN. Abdulmutallab said he got the explosives in Yemen from an Al Qaeda bomb maker who sewed the device into his underwear.

Passengers have told investigators the man went into the bathroom for 20 minutes before landing and complained about stomach problems before pulling a blanket on himself.

Just as the plane was getting ready to land, they heard a pop, smelled smoke and then saw the man on fire. A Dutch passenger, Jasper Schuringa, jumped on the Nigerian to subdue him, and a fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire.

The House Committee on Homeland Security chairman, Bennie Thompson, said it was a very close call. “We’re just fortunate nothing happened. This was a serious situation,” he said. Thompson said Congress will look into the matter soon. “As soon as we reconvene from the holiday recess, we will start looking into the circumstances around the Northwest flight incident.”

Nigeria’s acting ambassador to the United States, Babagana Wakil, immediately issued a statement, which he read to the Voice of America over the phone. “Expectedly, the embassy is already in contact with relevant U.S. authorities over the incident to facilitate any preliminary investigations to get to the bottom of this unfortunate development. Officers from the embassy have already flown to Michigan to gain consular access to the individual under investigation, and to offer the mission’s cooperation to federal and local authorities,” he said.

The suspect’s family members in Nigeria said they were shocked. The suspect’s father, an accountant and businessman, was previously a very well known banker in Africa’s most populous nation. Friends and family said Adbulmutallab had studied in Togo and London, and that he had recently made several trips to Yemen. His father had, apparently, made concerns with his son’s extremist connections known to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria.

Adbulmutallab told the FBI he met with a radical Yemeni cleric he corresponded with online. The cleric is not believed to be Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Imam connected to Major Nidal Malik Hasan who carried out the Fort Hood shooting last month.

Friday, the White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism. U.S. media reports say the suspect told interrogators he had affiliations with Al Qaeda.

The charges that were read against him Saturday carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Meanwhile, security screening measures have upgraded in the wake of the foiled attack, including only allowing one carry-on bag for international passengers, banning anyone from moving around the airplane during the last hour of the flight and additional “unpredictable” measures that will vary from airport to airport.
