Three rural councils in New South Wales, Australia enter 7-day lockdown

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

A week-long lockdown began at midnight yesterday in the City of Orange, Blayney Shire, and Cabonne Shire local government areas in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, after a local resident was infected with COVID-19 by a truck driver at the Nestlé Purina PetCare food factory in Blayney, which the driver had visited daily from July 13 to 16.

The decision to go into lockdown follows what ABC News described as a “crisis cabinet meeting” of the New South Wales government. Under the new regulations, residents of the three areas will only be permitted to leave their homes for “essential” reasons. Shops, schools, and construction are remaining open. Five sites in Orange have been listed as exposure venues, and people who visited one or more are advised by NSW Health to get tested for the coronavirus and to self-isolate for two weeks.

A lockdown in the Greater Sydney area, including the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Central Coast, has been ongoing since June 26 due to an outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19. New South Wales yesterday recorded 78 new cases of COVID-19. The Western NSW Local Health District has put hospitals on red alert, limiting visits.

Coalition ups ante on Australian school tax rebates

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Australian opposition leader Tony Abbott has pledged private school relief if the Liberal/National coalition wins the upcoming federal election. The pledge came in response to the Australian Labor Party leader, and current Prime Minister, Julia Gillard proposing a uniform and school equipment tax break expansion.

Abbott’s proposal includes an offer of tax rebates for sending a child to a private school. For students in primary school, prep to grade 6, the rebate will rise to $500 Australian a year per student and families will be then able to claim 50% rebate up to $1000.

“We are expanding the rebate so it can be claimed for school fees and also for other educational costs such as tuition and special educational costs for children with, for instance, dyslexia,” Abbott said at a press conference in Brisbane.

Before the election was called, Gillard had aimed to pledge $220 million over four years to expand the current tax breaks to cover refunds each worth $390 for primary school uniforms and $779 for high school uniforms, as well as refunds for other school equipment like texts books and computers.

“We all know that uniforms can be an expensive part of sending kids to school, but this change, along with the existing refund for textbooks and computers, will help families with that cost,” stated Gillard.

An opposition spokesperson claimed that the “obvious flaw in Labor’s policy is that it only applies to stationery, computer expenses and uniforms […] You know as a parent that you need help for a whole range of expenses. Extra teachers for children with dyslexia or the costs of doing music and all the other expenses like excursions and so forth.”

The expansion is expected to cost $760 million in total and one that Abbott claims needs to happen as “cost of living pressures tend to be greatest when your kids are at school”.

New York executive files $60 million libel lawsuit over insurance scandal

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

A former Marsh & McLennan Cos. executive has hit former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer with a $60 million defamation lawsuit over an online magazine article regarding an insurance bid-rigging scandal.

William Gilman, a former Marsh managing director, filed a complaint last Friday in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, over allegations Mr. Spitzer defamed him in a Slate article published a year ago. A copy of the complaint was made public on Monday.

Gilman, who had a final insurance fraud charge dismissed in January, said Spitzer acted with “actual malice” by suggesting that he was guilty of crimes of which he was never accused.

Although he wasn’t named in the article, Mr. Gilman complained that Spitzer defamed him by writing that “Marsh’s behavior was a blatant abuse of law and market power: price-fixing, bid-rigging and kickbacks all designed to harm their customers and the market while Marsh and its employees pocketed the increased fees and kickbacks.”

“While Mr. Spitzer’s statements do not refer to Mr. Gilman by name, Mr. Gilman is readily identifiable as the subject of the defamatory comments,” said the complaint. “Mr. Spitzer was well aware of his own allegations as attorney general and the resolution of those allegations in favor of Mr. Gilman and yet, recklessly disregarded these facts.”

In 2004 Mr. Spizter, then the state’s Attorney General, announced an investigation into the practices at Marsh & McLennan, particularly fees paid by insures to brokers who place business with them. Gilman, who worked for the company at the time, was charged in 2005 with 37 counts of insurance fraud. Gilman’s final charge was dropped last January.

“I haven’t seen the lawsuit and so will not comment on it,” said Spitzer. “The illegalities rampant at Marsh & McLennan leading to their fine of $850 million and the multiple judicial findings of illegality are clear from the public record.”

Mr. Gilman is now seeking at least $10 million in compensatory damages; $20 million in general damages, including damage to his reputation; and $30 million in punitive damages.

I Need A Personal Loan To Stop An Eviction 5 Steps To Take

By Larry Donaldson

Facing eviction from your home can be a terrifying experience. The idea of being out on the street, moving back in with family or going back to being a renter are not appealing options for most people. After all, if buying your home feels like a privilege you can be proud of, then losing your home to eviction feels like a disgrace.

Usually, a person does not get an eviction notice unless they are behind several payments on their mortgage. Thus, even a sizable loan is not likely to completely pay off the sum total of your outstanding mortgage payments in one fell swoop.

On the other hand, many banks are becoming increasingly reasonable with their mortgage customers due to problems in the home mortgage industry as a whole. It just may be the case that being able to pay for one or two back-payments will be enough to put off the eviction indefinitely. Sometimes, a bank just needs to be able to see that you are really trying to stay in your house and are willing to cooperate.

If you are saying to yourself, “I need a personal loan to stop an eviction,” here are 5 steps to take to getting funded:

1. Understand what a personal loan can do for you:

A personal loan is a short-term loan for which you can qualify after going through an application process. It differs from a home loan or an auto loan in that with a personal loan, you are not specifying exactly how you will be using the money. Rather, you can use it for anything you like.

2. Understand the downside of a personal loan:

The only downside to a personal loan is that it is a short-term loan, so you should have a plan together for how to repay the loan within a short period of time of say 1-2 months. Also, a personal loan often has a high interest rate associated with it. Often, personal loans are taken out by making out a check to the lender against a future paycheck.

3. Secured or unsecured: what’s your fancy?

There are two main types of these loans: secured and unsecured. The main difference is that with secured loans, you have to put up some type of collateral against the loan. In exchange, you get a lower rate that with an unsecured loan which does not require collateral.

4. Check your credit score:

Before filling out any applications, it is always a good idea to go ahead and check your credit score before applying. Run your report with TransUnion, Experian and Equifax since your FICO score will vary from one to the next. At the very least, you will know where you stand in terms of your credit. And, doing this will give you the chance to protest and fix any glitches you find there.

5. Apply to multiple trusted personal loan lenders:

To get the best rate for your loan, make sure you apply to many lenders, not just one or two. You may be surprised how much the interest rate and other loan terms can vary depending upon which lender you try. You will never you if you got the best-possible rate without doing your homework.

Take these 5 steps to avoid eviction by taking out a personal loan.

Scientists report chemotherapy cocktail may cause adult women to grow new egg cells

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.

These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.

The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”

The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

SEPTA buys rail cars from NJ Transit to deal with crowding

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

As gas prices have risen in the United States, the regional transport authority for southeastern Pennsylvania, SEPTA, has seen a sharp increase in ridership, which has caused overcrowding on the trains.

“As fuel prices have continued to rise, SEPTA ridership has steadily increased and is the highest in 18 years,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. Monthly ridership was 22 percent higher last month than a year ago.

“They have crushed loads on their rail lines, already where people are standing, and there’s not enough seats,” said Rich Bickel, the director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“At peak times some railcars are standing room only and commuter parking lots are nearly full. All Regional Rail lines are running near full capacity and the train station parking lots are at about 90 percent capacity or more,” SEPTA spokesperson Felipe Suarez said.

While SEPTA awaits new Silverliner V trains from Hyundai Rotem, which begin arriving in 2009, it had hoped to lease eight rail cars from New Jersey Transit, at an agreed-upon rate of US$10,000 per month. However, due to problems with insurance and liability indemnification, the deal fell through, according to Casey.

SEPTA has entered a new agreement to purchase the eight rail cars from NJ Transit. The transit authority will pay US$670,000 for the cars and assorted supplies plus one additional inoperative car which will be used for spare parts. The rail cars will be operated using a SEPTA provided locomotive as they are not self-propelled.

The cars are being disposed of by NJ Transit because it has switched from single-floor cars to double-decker cars.

SEPTA is expecting to raise US$3.1 million by selling rail that has been out of service since 1981 at auction.

Quick Tips To Find The Right Secure Storage Gloucester Company

Quick Tips To Find The Right Secure Storage Gloucester Company

by

Dave Staley

By following the tips below you will be able to make an informed decision about what company is right for you.

Location:

Choose a storage company that is easily accessed by main road. Ideally, the company you choose should be within a 30-minute drive of your house. Also ensure that you are able to park your car outside, as this will be essential during the loading and unloading process.

Cost:

Research different self storage options in Gloucester and obtain several quotes before committing to one company. Check to see what the quote does and does not include there may be extra charges for use of certain facilities.

Security:

As they are responsible for your possessions, the secure storage company you choose should be providing round the clock surveillance on its storage units. This may be in the form of security guards patrolling the area, CCTV cameras, or a combination of both. Ensure you are happy with the security measures in place.

Options and service:

Find out from the storage company what is included in the service provided. Do you, for example, have 24-hour access to the storage unit? If not, how much notice do you have to give? Likewise, find out whether you have the option to add more items to your container in the future, or whether there will be a charge involved in doing so.

Size:

What are the sizes on offer at the secure storage companies in Gloucester that you are researching? Can you only buy space by the unit, or is there the option to purchase half units? For students or people who live abroad, having the option of renting smaller spaces might be a useful option.

Time:

Check what the minimum length of time you can hire a unit for is. Likewise, what is the longest amount of time you can rent a unit for? How flexible is the company on time commitments? Use this information when determining what company to choose.

Reputation:

When it comes to storing your most precious possessions, it pays to research into the reputations of the companies you are considering. If possible, use the recommendations of a family member or friend to help you decide. If this is not possible, look on the company website and read customer testimonials. You are looking for a reliable, friendly company that you can trust.

By following the steps above, you will choose the right secure storage company. Considering the time, size, location, options available, security measures in place and most importantly the reputation of the company will help you make an informed decision.

Monday, April 11, 2005

Anna Ayala, the Las Vegas woman who claims to have found the notorious “chili finger” at a Wendy’s outlet in San Jose, California, has filed lawsuits against other businesses, according to researchers at the Associated Press. Her previous court battles included the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, and even General Motors.

Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against El Pollo Loco, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car.

Ayala’s original account of the incident spoke “emotionally and with disgust” to the San Jose Mercury News when she described it to the paper.

“Lies, lies, lies, that’s all I am hearing. They should look at Wendy’s. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?” Ayala recently told The Associated Press. Ayala is now in her Las Vegas home, avoiding reporters.

“It doesn’t prove anything,” family spokesman Ken Bono told the San Francisco Chronicle. “My mom has 10 lawsuits. A lot of people have lawsuits. Why would she sue for money? She has plenty of money,” he said.

Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

“We just want to step back and take a deep breath,” Muyo told Knight Ridder Newspapers. “From a law enforcement point of view, once you establish it is a human finger, you have to wonder is this a case of industrial accident or is this a case of unreported homicide,” he said.

Las Vegas police searched Anna Ayala’s home on Wednesday, retrieving a cooler and other effects from her home, such as a makeup case.

Despite the incident, which has dramatically reduced sales at Northern California Wendy’s outlets, die-hard Wendy’s fans are still turning up for lunch, even at the outlet where the finger was found, at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

“We’ve eaten here for years,” a police officer told the San Francisco Chronicle under the condition that he remain anonymous. “They’re very nice people. When we work Spartan Stadium, we always eat here,” he said.

San Jose City Council candidate Andrew Diaz still eats the chili. And he witnessed the finger discovery.

“I walked away real slow,” Diaz told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I didn’t want any commotion,” he said.
