Student faces expulsion over blog post

Sunday, May 28, 2006

A 17-year-old student faces expulsion by the Plainfield School District in Plainfield, Illinois as a result of blog posts he made on xanga.com which were critical of the school staff, alleging bullying and intimidation. The student has already been suspended for 10 days for the “inappropriate comments” and “threats” the school felt he had expressed on his blog. The posts were not made on school time or with school equipment.

On May 1, the student posted the following message that apparently initiated the suspension:

“dear plainfield school district 202:
i know you read this. and you suck. suspend me or what ever you would like to do. but this is my fuckin web site and i can put what ever i want on it. kinda goes with the first amendment. by suspending kyle again for his xanga you guys are pathetic and totally irrational. first amendment you fucks. freedom of speech. and who the fuck are you to say what some one can do from there own personal computer. one more thing kiss my ass.”

On May 2, the student continued his passionate rant, giving some background to the controversy:

“you are bully’s. I feel threatened by you. if you don’t like what you see here then do not come here its that simple. I’m pretty sure when you suspended Sam you brought her to tears, you are a bully and you make me sick. there’s nothing you can do about us posting about parties we’ve been to and how much liquor we had or how much pot was smoked, the police need to do a better job, you are not the police. and how is it that you feel threatened what was said that was so threatening. I feel threatened by you, I cant even have a public web page with out you bullying me and telling me what has to be removed. where is this freedom of speech that this government is sworn to uphold? none of this is posted at school, its all posted from our home computers, and once we step foot into our homes we are not on school property any more. you are just power hungry, don’t you ever think? did you stop to think that maybe this will make parents angry that you are bullying their children around? did you ever stop to think that maybe now you really are going to have a threat on your hands now that you have just pissed off kids for voicing their opinions? did you ever stop to think this will start a community backlash? The kids at Columbine did what they did because they were bullied. In my opinion you are the real threat here. None of us ever put in our xanga’s that they were going to kill or bring harm to any one. we voiced our opinions. you are the real threat here. you are depriving us of our right to learn. now stick that in your pipe and smoke it.”

Attorney Carl Buck, who feels the school authorities have overstepped their boundaries, says, “The district is going to take away the student’s education for exercising his freedom of speech… I feel like they are trying to control his freedom of speech. … He is saying, ‘You can’t bully people and we have a right to object and you can’t throw people out of school for voicing their opinions.'”

Other students at the school posted messages of support in their own Xanga blogs. A blogger named Meghan wrote, “As Americans, we have the right to speak our mind.” Another student, Heather, who found out about the possible expulsion through the local news, wrote that “first of all, Xanga is outside of school … second of all … there was no threat towards anyone on his posts.”

In a related case in March 2006, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that an Alaska high school acted improperly by suspending a student for carrying a banner reading “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” across the street from the school.

Corporate Training Through Distance Learning

Submitted by: Tim Henry

Businesses are always looking for effective and ineffective ways to train their employees. Their needs range from orientation to apprenticeships, to sales and communications, through to technical and professional skills training. What they have found is that distance learning can meet all of their needs, efficiently and at a cost that is significantly reduced from almost any other method of training.

Some estimates have placed the number of American workers that need to be trained or retrained to meet existing and future needs of American business at around 50 million people. That s a lot of people that need to acquire new skills in our new economy and certainly a lot of resources that will have to be applied to ensure its success. Distance training has opened up a new low-cost way for companies to provide that training and more and more are joining the ranks of the online training express every year.

Companies can use distance training to provide all of the their employees with a solid understanding of the mission, goals and objectives of that organization. In these days when employee satisfaction and retention is seen as directly related to the bottom line, this becomes crucial to its success. Having everyone knowing and practicing these principles consistently throughout the organization is not only necessary, but value added as well.

Large corporations with thousands of employees scattered at numerous locations across the country already have online communication vehicles to provide information to employees and gather their input and feedback. What they have decided to do is to utilize this online network to educate their employees as well. This may be a new sales technique or style that they want to implement or a focus on customer satisfaction that they want to improve. Whatever the purpose it can now be delivered and taught through a distance learning program.

In some cases these same corporations have contracted directly with online university programs to offer a package of distance learning programs to all of their employees. They pay up front for the education costs and employees plug in at work or at home to upgrade their skills and learn new ones. Some progressive employers also encourage their staff to enroll in online degree granting programs at a low or subsidized cost so that the employees can finally get or complete their college education. They are not only creating happier employees but employees who will have the skills to grow and advance within their organization.

FBI arrests four in alleged plot to bomb Bronx synagogues, shoot down plane

Friday, May 22, 2009

United States law enforcement officials announced the arrest Thursday of four men in connection with a plot to blow up two synagogues in The Bronx, a borough of New York City, and shoot down military airplanes flying out of the Stewart Air National Guard Base.

The men allegedly placed car bombs wired to cell phones outside the Riverdale Temple and nearby Riverdale Jewish Center in the Bronx area of the city. New York City Police Department commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said one of the suspects placed what he believed were homemade bombs, or improvised explosive devices, in separate vehicles parked outside the synagogues. The other three suspects served as lookouts.

According to a joint statement released by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the FBI and the New York City Police Department, the men were returning to the vehicle and were planning to attack aircraft at the Air National Guard base at Stewart airport in Newburgh, with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles when law enforcement stopped them.

As the men were returning to the vehicle, the signal was given for the arrest. An 18-wheel New York City Police Department vehicle blocked the end of the street. The FBI informer also served as the driver of the suspects’ vehicle. Another armored vehicle arrived, and officers from the department’s Emergency Service Unit, according to witnesses, smashed the blackened windows of the SUV, removed the men from the vehicle, and handcuffed them on the ground. None offered resistance.

The men had previously conducted surveillance of military planes at the Air National Guard base including taking photographs.

Both the car bombs and the missiles were actually fakes given to the plotters with the help of an informant for the FBI, who posed as a Pakistani militant affiliated with Al-Qaeda. Each of the two homemade bombs was equipped with about 37 pounds of inert material labeled as C-4 plastic explosives, but the devices had been ‘totally disabled by the FBI,” and “there was no danger to anyone,” Commissioner Kelly said.

“While the bombs these terrorists attempted to plant tonight were – unbeknownst to them – fake, this latest attempt to attack our freedoms shows that the homeland security threats against New York City are sadly all too real,” said Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City.

The suspects are reported to be four Muslim men; three U.S. citizens, one Haitian. The Daily News reports that three of the men are jail-house converts to Islam.

James Cromitie, 53, the reported leader, claims that his parents live in Afghanistan and told the FBI informant that he was angry about the U.S. military killing Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He had lived in Brooklyn and had a record of “as many as 27 arrests” for minor crimes “both upstate and in New York City.”

The other suspects are David Williams, Onta Williams, and Laguerre Payen a native of Haiti.

At the arraignment held Thursday, attorney for Laguerre Payen, Marilyn Reader, told the court that Payen has “a very low borderline” intelligence quotient and receives medication for schizophrenia.

US Justice Department sues American Airlines on behalf of reservists

Sunday, January 15, 2006

The US government has filed a lawsuit against American Airlines on behalf of three pilots. The pilots were employed by the company while serving in the Naval Reserve and Air National Guard.

The US Department of Justice alleges that when the pilots were called into active duty by the US military, American Airlines denied them employment benefits. The Department of Justice said in a complaint filed in the US District Court in Dallas that American Airlines conducted an audit of leave taken for military service by pilots in 2001. The Justice Department charges that based on that audit American Airlines then cut the employment benefits of pilots who had taken military leave while not cuting benefits of pilots who had taken non-military leave.

Justice Department Assistant Attorney General Wan Kim said “This nation depends on our reservists to faithfully carry out their duty. No reservists, indeed no members of the armed forces, should ever be punished or discriminated against for answering the call of duty.”

This is the first class action lawsuit under the 1994 Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

Decoding Web Hosting Reviews, Part Ii: From Java To Windows

By Sage Kalmus

In an earlier article, we explained how web hosting reviews identify web hosting companies by the services they offer. So if a web host offers ASP technology, they say its an ASP hosting company. With that in mind, in this two-part series weve laid out many of the most common types of web hosting services youll read about in the web hosting reviews you peruse. Last time we started at ASP and got as far as FrontPage. Now well finish the alphabet.

If the web hosting review mentions Java Hosting, it refers to one of the most widely used and widely recognized programming languages, the use of which practically assures you that your website will be understood by any computer in the world. Java is a simple, versatile, cross-platform, tag-based language that lets you build all sorts of things: bit maps and vector graphics; server-side applications for forums and forms, online polls and stores; improved database, email, PDF, XML, and Microsoft Office functionality and more. Using Java opens you up to libraries upon libraries of prewritten code for every imaginable use you could have for your website. You may also see web hosting reviews mentioning JSP or Java Server Pages, which allow you to create entire websites that are platform independent.

If the web hosting review mentions MySQL Hosting, its referring to one of the most widely used and recognized databases on the internet. If your web presence is going to be a database-heavy operation, consider a MySQL hosting provider. Youll get extra support for adding, accessing, editing, and processing data in your many MySQL databases. Web hosting reviews for MySQL hosting providers should mention the number of databases offered, the ease-of-use of the interface youll be using day in and day out, CRON support for automating routine tasks, and PHP support since PHP and MySQL go hand in hand. Read on!

If the web hosting review mentions PHP Hosting, it refers to a server-side scripting language that is commonly used in conjunction with MySQL databases. It is an open-source language and as such can be altered and amended in any way you see fit. As such, there are tons of free, prewritten PHP scripts all over the internet for your convenience. Because PHP is a server-side language, it is cross-platform (meaning Unix, Linux, and Windows computers can see your site the same). And since PHP is a server-side language, if you plan to use it in running your dynamic, interactive, database driven website, you must go with a PHP hosting provider.

If the web hosting review mentions SSH Hosting, it refers to Secure Shell, a Linux-based protocol that gives users remote terminal access to their computer systems, meaning that administrators can perform private, confidential administrative tasks on their server — tasks that ordinarily must be done directly on the server itself — from a different computer in a completely different location — securely.

If the web hosting review mentions Windows Hosting it just means that, like a computer might run Microsoft Windows as its operating system, your web server too will be running Microsoft Windows. Thats all. A windows hosting company might very well offer PHP hosting, MySQL hosting, FrontPage hosting, Java hosting, ASP hosting, and more. Which brings us to our final point

We closed Part I of this series with this note and well close Part II the same way. One web hosting provider alone quite likely will offer a great many of the hosting services weve described and more. Make sure you read each web hosting review carefully to be clear on exactly what types of hosting each company offers.
