Dr. Joseph Merlino on sexuality, insanity, Freud, fetishes and apathy

Friday, October 5, 2007

You may not know Joseph Merlino, but he knows about you and what makes you function. He knows what turns you on and he knows whether it is a problem for you. Merlino, who is the psychiatry adviser to the New York Daily News, is one of the more accomplished psychiatrists in his field and he is the Senior Editor of the forthcoming book, Freud at 150: 21st Century Essays on a Man of Genius. The battle over interpreting Freud’s legacy still rages, a testament to the father of psychoanalysis and his continuing impact today.

On the eve of the book’s publication, Wikinews reporter David Shankbone went to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to discuss the past and future of Freud and psychoanalysis with Dr. Merlino, one of the preeminent modern psychoanalysts. Shankbone took the opportunity to ask about what insanity is, discuss aberrant urges, reflect upon sadomasochism (“I’m not considered an expert in that field,” laughed Dr. Merlino), and the hegemony of heterosexuality.

Dr. Merlino posits that absent structural, biochemical or physiological defects, insanity and pathology are relative and in flux with the changing culture of which you are a part. So it is possible to be sane and insane all in one day if, for instance, you are gay and fly from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia.

Pet parrot saves owners’ lives

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

It turns out that dogs may not be the only ‘man’s best friend.’ A parrot in Muncie, Indiana is being credited with saving the lives of its owners.

According to the owner 33-year-old Shannon Conwell along with his 9-year-old son were watching television when they both fell asleep on the living room couch when a fire began to spread through the house around 3:00 a.m. on Friday October 19.

The Amazon, yellow-headed Parrot named Peanut reportedly imitates the sounds of several objects and began to emit one very similar to a fire alarm, waking the family from their sleep.

“He was really screaming his head off. I grabbed my son and my bird and got out of the house,” said Conwell who also said that the fire alarm was also going off, but the bird woke her and her son. Conwell said that there were several pieces of medical equipment inside the house that also make a lot of noise. The equipment was there due to an accidental finger amputation which occurred only a few hours prior to the fire.

A bedroom, the kitchen and the dining room were all severely damaged in the fire, but no one was injured or killed. The fire department says that they are currently investigating the incident and have not said what the cause was.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Three Common Reasons For Seeking Couples Counseling

byAlma Abell

Couples from all walks of life have issues that can break their relationships apart. While famous athletes or entertainers may not have the same money-related issues as the average married couple, even they still face challenges. Here are the top three reasons to seek relationship help from a therapist.

Lack of Communication

The reason why most people end up in couples counseling with a spouse or partner is due to a lack of communication. Some people do not know how to express themselves or they are afraid to speak out because they may offend their partners. A therapist can teach a couple how to communicate openly without exacerbating their problems.

Intimacy Problems

Not every couple is on the same page when it comes to sex and that can break up a relationship. If you or your partner have a fear of intimacy due to past trauma or feelings of inadequacy, going to couples counseling can help reveal and deal with those issues. A therapist can give couples the tools they need to be more intimate and help form a deeper connection between them.

Make up or Break up?

If there have been problems in your relationship and you and your partner are considering ending the relationship, going to couples counseling can help you both decide what to do. If one partner still wants to work on the relationship but the other is adamant on ending it, the therapist can help them both express their feelings to try to come to an agreement on what to do. Whether your issues are the result of infidelity, an addiction, or growing apart, going to counseling may mend or end the relationship.

If you and your spouse need help with some issues in your relationship, contact Dr. Rebecca Roy, Ph.D., The Industry Therapist to get help with these or other relationship issues. You can also follow them on Google+ for more updates.

Jackpot rises on ‘Mega Millions’ lottery in US; breaks record

Friday, August 31, 2007

In just over 24 hours, the Mega Millions lottery jackpot in the United States has risen to US$330,000,000 to make it the third largest lottery jackpot in the world.

On Thursday, the jackpot was at $325 million and it still could rise before the drawing takes place tonight at 8:00 p.m. (pacific time), 11:00 p.m. (eastern time).

Twelve states in the U.S. participate in the lottery and the odds of at least one person winning the jackpot are one in 175,711,536. It costs just one dollar to purchase a ticket and if you win, you can receive the winnings in sums of 36,000 for every million won, each year, or receive it all in one lump sum which totals just under $200 million before taxes.

On March 6, 2007, the Mega Millions jackpot of US$390 million, the highest lottery jackpot ever in the world, was paid out to two individuals who lived in Georgia and New Jersey. If no one wins Friday’s jackpot, which will have rolled over 16 times without a single winner, it could break the record for the largest lottery jackpot ever.

Aerial collision over Austria kills 8

Monday, March 5, 2007

An aerial collision near Zell am See, Austria has killed 8 people, 5 Swiss citizens, 1 French, 1 German and 1 Austrian.

The collision occurred Monday afternoon between a Super Puma helicopter belonging to Helog S.A, based in Küssnacht (Switzerland), and a private Diamond DA20 “Katana” light aircraft which had taken off from the aerodrome at Zell am See.

All 7 of the passengers and crew from the helicopter were pronounced dead at the scene, as was the pilot of the light aircraft, which had no passengers on board.

The debris from the accident spread over a 20 metre radius and bystanders near to the incident reported seeing a “huge ball of fire in the sky”.

The reason for the accident is presently unclear as both craft have been confirmed as passing pre-flight testing at their respective take-off locations. Furthermore, Zell am See tower radioed the helicopter that a plane was taking off, to which the helicopter replied positively. This conversation should have been heard over radio by the pilot of the plane.

The site of the accident is now being guarded by police, pending the arrival of an investigation team and a delegate of the state attorney.

U.S. federal judge halts Trump’s ban on refugees, people from Muslim countries entering U.S.

Sunday, January 29, 2017

At 9:00 p.m. U.S. east coast time yesterday (0200 today UTC), a U.S. federal judge in Brooklyn issued an emergency ruling halting deportation of individuals from the U.S. under the ban on individuals from seven majority-Muslim countries entering the United States that president Donald Trump had initiated by executive order on Friday. Another judge in Virginia issued a similar ruling shortly afterward.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit on behalf of two Iraqis who had been detained at John F. Kennedy airport in New York. Judge Ann Donnelly granted the emergency request to halt deportation under the executive order on grounds some of the people who would be deported would face “imminent danger” and “irreparable injury.”

They put the cuffs on […] You know how many soldiers I touch by this hand?

“What I do for this country? They put the cuffs on” said Hameed Khalid Darweesh, who had worked as a translator for the U.S. military for more than ten years and had been issued a visa after extensive background checks. “You know how many soldiers I touch by this hand?”

Earlier yesterday, Trump issued a statement that his executive order was being carried out smoothly: “It’s not a Muslim ban, but we were totally prepared. It’s working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over.” The New York Times described the effects of the ban as “upheaval,” and The Verge described them as “widespread confusion.”

Customs agents at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York detained about twelve people. Others were prevented from boarding planes bound for the U.S. This included both individuals coming to the U.S. for the first time and those in possession of a green card as proof of legal residency, such as international students returning for the spring semester and legal residents returning from visits to their home countries. According to Homeland Security, 109 people were in transit when the order was issued and were prevented from entering the U.S. upon arrival and 173 were prevented from boarding planes, of which 81 were later given waivers admitting them to the country.

The stay applies to individuals who are already in the United States and those who are currently traveling to the United States under legal visas but does not clearly apply to anyone who has not yet departed for the U.S. While it prevents these people from being deported, it does not specifically allow them to enter the United States either. It is not clear whether they will be allowed to do so or held in detention.

Trump’s executive order, officially titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” specifically placed a 90-day halt on immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia; suspended all refugee admissions for 120 days; and suspended all entry of Syrian refugees into the United States without time limit. Although the administration issued a statement indicating the measure was meant to target “countries compromised by terrorism,” National Public Radio‘s Greg Myre remarked it has been more than twenty years since the last time any of the targeted countries was the origin for a fatal Muslim extremist attack in the U.S. The executive order did not apply to any of the countries from which recent such attackers have hailed, such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt which were home to many of the 9/11 hijackers.

NPR noted the seven countries named in the executive order are places where Trump’s family has “no business interests” in play, whereas Trump’s family is conducting or planning projects in Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Dubai, Indonesia and Turkey. Former Obama administration ethics advisor and current fellow at the Brookings Institution Norman Eisen called the decision an “open and notorious violation of the Constitution.”

A Frame Of Conditions That Require Speech Therapy Or A Speech Pathologist.}

Submitted by: Develop Speech

There are four basic skills in communicating any language. Those are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The training for the above skills is imparted to the children from the parents to the teachers.

But sometimes children have problems saying certain sounds or words making it hard for others to understand what they’re trying to say. If we find the following problems of the kids, then they require a speech therapy for toddlers.

. Trouble saying certain sounds words correctly,

. When the vocal quality of an individual is altered/ changed in such a way that it is thought to be abnormal to the listener,

. Difficulty understanding people or having trouble putting words together to express thoughts, . Repeating certain sounds and/or having trouble saying a complete word, Stuttering is a fluency disorder.

Some children will grow out of the problem themselves, while others will need to see a speech or language therapist to remedy the problem.

Speech therapy for children is the treatment or the correction of a speech impairment which resulted from birth, or from disease, injury or prior medical treatment. It is the skill to identify types of communication problems (articulation; fluency; voice; receptive and expressive language disorders, etc.) and the best way to treat them.

Speech Pathologists provide a wide range of services, mainly on an individual basis, but also as support for individuals, families, support groups, and providing information for the general public. Speech services begin with initial screening for communication and swallowing disorders and continue with assessment and diagnosis, consultation for the provision of advice regarding management, intervention and treatment, and provision counseling and other follow-up services for these disorders. Speech-therapist can work in a wide range of settings. The clinical environments include both public and private hospitals, and home-health care. They also work as part of the support structure in the education system working in public and private schools, colleges, and universities. Speech-language experts agree that parental involvement is crucial to the success of a child’s progress in speech or language therapy.

Adults may also experience speech and language difficulties for a variety of reasons. Information about specific types of speech and language disorders and as of some medical conditions which require speech therapy for adults are as follows:

SPEECH DISORDERS..

Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder. It is caused by damage to the parts of the brain related to speaking. Other terms include apraxia of speech, acquired apraxia of speech, verbal apraxia, and dyspraxia. People with apraxia of speech have trouble sequencing the sounds in syllables and words. The severity depends on the nature of the brain damage.

Dysarthria The muscles of the mouth, face, and respiratory system may become weak, move slowly, or not move at all after a stroke or other brain injury. The type and severity of dysarthria depend on which area of the nervous system is affected.

Stuttering affects the fluency of speech. It begins during childhood and, in some cases, lasts throughout life. The disorder is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, also called “disfluency.” Most people produce brief disfluency from time to time. For instance, some words are repeated and others are preceded by “um” or “uh.” Disfluency are not necessarily a problem; however, they can impede communication when a person produces too many of them.

LANGUAGE DISORDERS.

Aphasia is a disorder that results from damage to the parts of the brain that contain language. Aphasia causes problems with any or all the following: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Some medical conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Dementia, Huntington’s disease, Laryngeal Cancer, Oral Cancer, Right Hemisphere Brain Injury, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury

There are separate standardized assessment tools administered for infants, school-aged children, adolescents and adults. Assessments primarily examine the form, content, and use of language, as well as reading, writing, and some cognitive functions. Speech therapy ideas have an in-depth understanding of language and communication, knowledge of how and where it breaks down, and how to capitalize on existing skills.
