United States: Coroner says former patient killed self and three hostages at California veterans center

Saturday, March 17, 2018

In the United States, autopsy results were released on Thursday by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, which show that Albert Wong killed himself after shooting his three hostages at The Pathway Home veterans’ psychiatric center in Yountville, California last Friday. The hostages died instantly from rifle shots to the head, and Wong shot himself in the head with a shotgun. Officials said there was no indication any of the four was killed by a sheriff’s deputy who exchanged shots with Wong.

The Sheriff of Napa County also acts as the county coroner. According to the official report, the three hostages “all suffered immediately fatal head wounds caused by a high velocity projectile consistent with the rifle that the shooter, Albert Wong, used in this incident”. Wong’s fatal head wound was self-inflicted. Sheriff’s Captain Steven Blower clarified that neither Wong nor the hostages was shot by the deputy.

According to authorities, Wong, a former Pathway resident, drove a rented car to the center Friday, March 9, and shortly after 10 AM local time (UTC-8), dressed in black and armed with a semi-automatic rifle, took five of the people at a leaving party hostage. The first call to the emergency 9-1-1 number was made at about 10:20. About ten minutes later, shots were heard, and a sheriff’s deputy and Wong exchanged fire. Wong then shut himself in a room with three of the hostages. The campus was evacuated, but there was no further contact with Wong. A little before 6 PM, a video feed from a remote-controlled robot showed the four people in the room were probably dead.

The three victims were all women. Christine Loeber, 48, was the executive director of the home. Jen Golick, 42, was its clinical director. Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba, 36, was a psychologist on the staff of the San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System and also worked with PsychArmor, a nonprofit group, to create a toolkit for college campuses to assist students with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She was entering her last trimester of pregnancy.

Wong, 36, was a decorated veteran who served in the infantry in Afghanistan for a year in 2011–2012. He had been in treatment at the center for about a year but had been expelled two weeks before the hostage-taking because knives were found in his possession. His brother Tyrone Lampkin told The Press Democrat, Wong had been angry and said he “wanted to get back at them”, but what he had mentioned was to “talk to them, yell at them, not to kill them”.

The Board of Directors of The Pathway Home announced on Wednesday that it would suspend operations “indefinitely”. It is a ten-year-old non-profit in-patient center treating veterans with PTSD, brain injuries, depression and addictions on the campus of the Veterans Home of California Yountville. Yountville is a small town in the wine country a little more than 50 miles north of San Francisco. Founded as a last-resort center for intensive treatment of veterans who had not been helped by other approaches, it transitioned in 2015 to providing care to those not yet in crisis, including veterans studying at Napa Community College. The Veterans Home is the largest in the United States, with more than 900 residents.

If the family is going to be taking a vacation to Hawaii, it is obvious that there is a great desire to do plenty of sightseeing. This means that it is important to be sure to have someone to do the driving. Get started by hiring an Airport Van Service to pick up the family from the airport and deliver them to the hotel. This way, everyone can get cleaned up and get ready to go see some of the most popular attractions.Clearly, it is going to be very easy to get lost in the area. Because of this, it is always a good idea to rely on someone else to take over the driving. A professional driver will be waiting at the airport. At this point, they will expect instruction regarding where to go. Of course, it is possible to look at the different things that they have to offer on their Facebook page or even their website, Hawaiiexecutivetransportation.com. Don’t get discouraged if it seems difficult to know where to go in Hawaii. This is something that is very common. One thing is for certain, it is quite often the vacation of a lifetime. This means that nothing should be overlooked. It doesn’t matter whether it is necessary to have a limousine, a sedan, or even an SUV. Maybe someone is getting married and they need a ride to the airport or anywhere else in the area. If this is the case, it is definitely a special occasion and it should be treated appropriately.

Maybe there is a corporate event coming up. If this is the situation, there’s a good chance that impressing someone is important. Make arrangements to have someone available to meet clients at the airport. A driver will deliver them to the meeting and make sure that they are well cared for during the commute. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It makes sense to make sure that someone is available to drive. Indexable drill bit

by

porcelaindrillbitIndexable drill bits are primarily used in CNC and other high precision or production equipment, and are the most expensive type of drill bit, costing the most per diameter and length. Like indexable lathe tools and milling cutters, they use replaceable carbide or ceramic inserts as a cutting face to alleviate the need for a tool grinder. One insert is responsible for the outer radius of the cut, and another insert is responsible for the inner radius. The tool itself handles the point deformity, as it is a low-wear task. The bit is hardened and coated against wear far more than the average drill bit, as the shank is non-consumable. Almost all indexable drill bits have multiple coolant channels for prolonged tool life under heavy usage. They are also readily available in odd configurations, such as straight flute, fast spiral, multiflute, and a variety of cutting face geometries.

Typically indexable drill bits are used in holes that are no deeper than about 5 times the bit diameter. They are capable of quite high axial loads and cut very fast.

Left-hand bit

Left-hand bits are almost always twist bits and are predominantly used in the repetition engineering industry on screw machines or drilling heads. Left-handed drill bits allow a machining operation to continue where either the spindle cannot be reversed or the design of the machine makes it more efficient to run left-handed. With the increased use of the more versatile CNC machines, their use is less common than when specialized machines were required for machining tasks.

Screw extractors are essentially left-hand bits of specialized shape, used to remove common right-hand screws whose heads are broken or too damaged to allow a screwdriver tip to engage, making use of a screwdriver impossible. The extractor is pressed against the damaged head and rotated counter-clockwise and will tend to jam in the damaged head and then turn the screw counter-clockwise, unscrewing it. For screws that break off deeper in the hole, an extractor set will often include left handed drill bits of the appropriate diameters so that grab holes can be drilled into the screws in a left handed direction, preventing further tightening of the broken piece.

Metal spade bit

A spade drill bit for metal is a two part bit with a tool holder and an insertable tip, called an insert. The inserts come in various sizes that range from 7/16 to 2.5 inches (11 to 64 mm). The tool holder usually has a coolant passage running through it.[9] They are capable of cutting to a depth of about 10 times the bit diameter. This type of drill bit can also be used to make stepped holes.

Man killed in harbour car crash in Cornwall, England

Monday, December 21, 2009

A man has been killed after a car accident in Cornwall, England. The collision involved a vehicle driving off a quay in Porthleven, near the town of Helston in the county and into the sea at around 2100 Greenwich Mean Time on Friday, according to reports from members of the public made to the police and the coastguard.

A major rescue operation was launched with contributions from the harbourmaster, the ambulance service, the police, the fire crews, a helicopter and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. After roughly two hours, a harbour crane lifted the vehicle out of the water that it had crashed into. It transpired that the man was the only occupant of the vehicle. It is believed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The man was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, which is situated in Truro, by ambulance. However, on arrival, he was pronounced dead.

Now tributes are being paid to 20-year-old Jamie Hocking after his death. The family of the man have said that he will be “truly missed by all who knew him”, describing Jamie with the words “loveable rogue”. The family also expressed their thanks to people offering sympathy messages and support from others, as well as the emergency services who assisted at the scene of the accident. Devon and Cornwall Constabulary are now asking any people who know of any information relating to the incident to contact them as soon as possible.

Spanish prime minister speaks on economic crisis

Monday, October 20, 2008

In an interview with Público, a Spanish newspaper, the prime minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has stated that ” if there is a global recession, it seems logical to expect that Spain will enter the recession in 2009 .”

In the interview Zapatero also described the worldwide economic situation as “difficult.” He recognized that ” the developed countries are or are going to experience negative growth, and developing countries are also going to see falling growth; resulting in a worldwide loss of jobs.”

We have a year-long financial crisis, which has had its most acute moment in the past two months, and I think now the financial markets are beginning to recover

Regarding the global financial situation, Zapatero continued by saying that “the financial system is a part of the economy, a crucial part. We have a year-long financial crisis, which has had its most acute moment in the past two months, and I think now the financial markets are beginning to recover.”

Asked about whether it would be desirable to another plan to help those overwhelmed by the size of their mortgage, Zapatero reiterated the falls in the Euro Interbank Offered Rate .

Zapatero then claimed that the average Spanish citizen would see their mortgage decrease by 28 a month (€330 per year) as result of the recent drops in interest rate, lead by seven central banks, including the European Central Bank which covers Spain, dropped their interest rate by 0.5%.

The prime minister then said that he was pleased with the role of Spain in the recent summits discussing the financial crisis, before adding that he believes the European Union will lead the way in solving the current issues in the markets.

Your 5 Step Annual Home Insurance Checkup

Submitted by: Nat Criss

As with any financial tool, it makes sense to periodically analyze your insurance holdings to make sure that you are on track towards your goals and adequately protected from downside risks. Many insurance industry professionals suggest an annual review of your policies to make sure that you have the coverage you need. Follow these steps to complete an annual insurance check-up:

1) Do some comparison shopping to verify that you are not overpaying with your current carrier. While you’re at it check into your current company or those you’re considering. Most if not all states have insurance departments where you can research various companies to see if they have any pending issues. The Better Business Bureau can be another great resource to help you investigate the track records of providers.

2) Look for additional savings and inquire about raising your deductible. Bringing your deductible up from $500 to $1,000 could equate to significant savings in your annual premiums. Another money saving tip can be getting quotes for multiple policies from the same carrier. Many insurance companies offer multi-line discounts so keeping your home and auto policies under one roof may lead to serious savings.

3) Maintain a good credit score to make yourself an attractive customer in the eyes of an insurer. Why? Insurance companies are like most businesses. They like to have their bills paid on time and do not want to spend time and money chasing down customers for payment. A customer with a low risk for default may enjoy lower premiums as a result.

4) Check with your current carrier to see if your existing policy can be adjusted to either add protection or scale back your existing coverage. If you are like many homeowners in the United States, your property value has likely taken a hit the past five years.

5) Ask about available discounts. Some carriers reward you for improving the safety of your home. Adding a home security system and dead bolt locks can protect your property from unwanted guests. Smoke alarms and sprinkler systems can help reduce the cost of fire damage. Of course some of these items are more cost prohibitive than others but there is no denying that they can help save your life and personal possessions.

When choosing a provider be sure to ask if they offer discounts for long-term customers. It may take you a handful of years to reap the benefits. But, in doing so, you may save big over the long run by not bouncing from carrier to carrier to save a couple dollars every year. One final money saving tip may be to see if you can save money each month with electronic bill payments. More and more companies recognize that mailing out bills, paying the associated postage, and having someone manually process those payments is not a good use of their funds. Thus, companies are offering incentives to help move their customers towards electronic delivery and payments.

While saving money on your insurance coverage is always nice, be sure that you also select a quality provider with a proven, stable track record.

Canada’s social insurance assets pass $140 billion in fourth quarter

Sunday, February 13, 2011

With a fourth-quarter investment earnings of $3.9 Billion CAD, largely driven by stock market rises, the Canada Pension Plan’s (CPP) assets rose to $140.1 Billion reported the CPP Investment Board on Thursday.

Rate of return for the quarter netted three percent, bringing the first nine months of the fiscal year to 8.3%. The fund’s broad exposure to equities, in concert with a good quarter for stocks both in Canada and internationally, was largely to be credited according to CEO David Deneson.

The assets value rose from $127.6 Billion March 31st 2010, to $138.6 B on September 30th, to $140.1 B December 31st. The $3.9 B investment earnings, 3.58 of which came from the 54% of the portfolio in equities, was partially offset by seasonal outlays of $2.4 B to plan members.

The fund was very active throughout the calendar year, and particularly active in infrastructure, real estate, and private equity. As part of a consortium they completed the $4.8 B purchase of UK-based Tomkins plc, as well as purchasing Australian-based Intoll for $3.4 B thus acquiring a 30% stake in the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR) near Toronto — which they expanded purchasing a further 10% stake from Spain’s Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A. (CINTRA). They acquired a 25% equity stake in Westfield Stratford City, a retail complex adjacent to London’s Olympics venue, among many real estate ventures.

The CPP fund covers every province except Quebec, whose Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec is the only larger pension fund in Canada. The five-year annualised investment rate of return for the CPP reserve fund was 3.5%, its 10-year rate of return was 5.6%, at the close of 2010. The fund was established in 1997.
