Grana Cochinilla Fina: Brilliant Natural Red Dye In Oaxaca

grana cochinilla fina: Brilliant Natural Red Dye in Oaxaca

by

Alvin Starkman

Most tourists have no idea that only a couple of hundred yards off the main highway, a minute or two from the black pottery village, is one the most fascinating destinations that the state of Oaxaca has to offer children and adults alike. And yet the majority of travelers have a least heard or read a snippet about the natural red dye which comes from a tiny insect and is used to color the rugs they buy in Teotitln del Valle, and other products including some of the foods and beverages we eat todaythe grana cochinilla fina, commonly known as simply cochineal.

I suspect that from reading their guidebooks or speaking to tour guides and taxi drivers, visitors are not generally made aware of the importance of this little bug on the world stage over centuries; or perhaps they think its enough to buy a tapete and be told its been dyed with cochineal, and see and touch a few dried insectsrather than spend 40 or 50 minutes in amazement. It might be different if they knew that during the conquest era, next to gold and silver cochineal was the most valuable commodity known to mankind, and that in 1758 Oaxaca exported over 1.5 million Spanish pounds of it to Europe, Africa and Asia for a multitude of uses including the dying of fabrics including uniforms worn by British nobility and cavalry. Together known as Tlapanochestli, the quaint research facility, museum, ranch and open-air teaching environment is located at Santa Mara Coyotepec off a dirt road only 15 minutes from downtown Oaxaca. The attraction is designed to hold the interest of travelers of all ages and all backgrounds, from layperson to academic or professional. Upon entering Tlapanochestli youll be greeted by one of the employees who works the ranch, or perhaps one of the two scientists who run the research and teaching programs, Engineers Manual Loera Fernndez and Ignacio del Ro Dueas. Youll learn about the lifecycle of the cochineal, how it attaches itself to and feeds off of a certain variety of nopal cactus, and about its harvesting and preparation for use as a dye. Both kids and grownups will delight and be awe-struck at having either a live or dried bug squished on their palm yielding the scarlet pigment. Youll be taught why not all types of nopal cactus are suitable for production of cochineal, which ones are used to make salads, and about varietals which produce the sweet red edible fruit known as tuna, seasonally sold in marketplaces just as apples and oranges, and just as often encountered as a sorbet flavor or fresh fruit juice. But your tour is not only about the insect and its host, but includes learning about a plethora of other natural products used to dye foods and fabrics, such pecan shells, oyster conch, pomegranate, marigold, moss, onions, and the ail plant which produces our blues and indigos. Combining some of these dyes with the cochineal results in yet a further spectrum of color. Youll also discover how to use cochineal in combination with lime juice or baking soda and with different colored natural wools to produce orange and purple hews. One cannot help but marvel at the diversity of commercial products which utilize the cochineal as a coloring such as lipsticks and makeup for those allergic or sensitive to synthetic red and orange tones, Danone yoghurt, Campari, and even Campbells soup. Often artists have opted to employ cochineal and other natural colors for their work, and accordingly witness walls adorned with examples of fine art created without the use of chemical-based paints. The photos of Prince Charles attendance at Tlapanochestli is a testament to the worlds continued fascination with the historical and contemporary significance of the grana cochinilla fina. In the gift shop theres an opportunity to purchase dried cochineal for your own use, ink in an attractive wax-sealed bottle, paints and pastes, balls of yarn, soaps, clothing, and for the children perhaps a paint set consisting of dried cochineal to crush using the miniature clay pestle and mortar, along with coloring pages with instruction sheet directing how to use the kit and produce your own shades of red, orange and pink. A short video puts the production of cochineal into its proper historical context using facts, anecdotes and mythology, along with colorful imagery, narrated using language easily understood by children. At the same time those with a background or interest in the sciences will have all of their questions answered. The film outlines the pre-hispanic use of the pigment; the development of an internationally regulated industry attracting the attention of worldwide heads of state from The Conquest forward; its importance in the global marketplace as the strongest and most brilliant dye known to humankind; and its decline in the mid 1800s upon the invention of synthetic coloration and the subsequent adverse impact on the Mexican economy. While Oaxacan production and export never did recover from 19th century recessionary factors, the video concludes on a upbeat note documenting the industrys resurgence in recent decades in the face of widespread health concerns regarding the continued reliance on synthetic substances to dye commercial products. After your cinematic journey back into history, and having gained knowledge about how natural dyes are produced and used in a multitude of applications, your perception of not only Oaxaca but also the Western World will have been enhanced foreverwhether youre in Oaxaca shopping for rugs, watching the native vendors in a market or ordering ice cream; or sitting in the comfort of your home and sipping a Campari and soda.

Why Managing Money Is Important For Students

By Jack Blacksmith

Did you know that you can deduct up to twenty five hundred dollars from your student loans interest? There are some rules to this however. Your loan is only eligible for the deduction if you took out the loan only for a higher education program that’s qualified by law. This can be not only for yourself, but your dependents and spouse as well.

The money for the loan must have been spent on expenses for college or vocational studies such as your tuition, textbooks, school supplies, any administrative fees, any type of equipment, your room and board, and transportation to and from school.

The student must be in a qualified degree program, and they must be a half-time student at least. As well, you’ll be obligated by law to repay the loan.

If someone else claims an exemption for the student, if you’re not allowed by law to get the loan, if the loan was obtained by a relative, or if the student is married to the receiver of the loan, but they are filing a separate return.

There are some limitations on what can be deducted and it’s best that you obtain all of that information ahead of time in order to save yourself from breaking any of the rules, ensuring that you get the most of your deduction.

As well, it’s important that the student is managing money efficiently. If debt is a major problem before going into the loan, then you may want to consolidate debt with a specific loan or program to do so. This will lower your monthly payments, and therefore lessen the burden on you in making your student loan payments.

Keep in mind that if you are paying your student loans after 2002, the “first 60 months” requirement on interest paid is discontinued, and deductions are permissible for voluntary interest payments, rather than only required payments as in the previous years. Also you take the deduction on either Form 1040 or Form 1040A.

It is a great benefit, and should be availed by all families, especially those families whose children aspire for higher education but cannot find sufficient funding. A tax deduction like this can help their parents cover a part of their requirements.

At Times The Best Option Is To Debt Consolidate

By Adriana Noton

When a family is in a nefarious debt situation their best choice may be to debt consolidate. Other choices such as bankruptcy can be helpful too. However, consolidation offers greater flexibility. A family can get out of financial worries while repairing their credit at the same time.

For instance, a financial relief consultant may be able to negotiate with the lender to reduce the interest being paid. This will lower the overall payments and also lower the balances faster. It will do this without harming the person’s credit rating as long as the new payments are made on time.

Furthermore, in some cases a financial consultant can get the entire balance lowered. Many folks have reported their credit card balances go from tens of thousands of dollars to just a few thousand thanks to their help. In a matter of months, a family is able to get everything paid off rather than it taking years.

In today’s recessionary economy, it is easy for folks to go from having perfect credit to wondering how they are going to make ends meet. This is why they should go to helpful people. Consolidation companies know the law and they can make the law work for their clients.

They can stop the phone calls and prevent repossessions. They can do all this while making it easy to pay the debts each month. Once they have negotiated with the lenders the individual payments can be lumped together into a single monthly payment. This means no more having to writing dozens of checks each month. A single payment is made directly to the counselor and they repay the creditors.

Their solutions can be fast and affordable. In no time at all the financial worries of the family can be eased. Before they know it, their debts are paid off and they have a clean slate. The credit scores have been repaired and they are well on their way to having good credit again.

In a number of cases, it might be best to file insolvency. The financial credit counselor will have the ability to recognize each person’s needs plus make their suggestions. If their packages cannot help folks, they will advise a good lawyer. Then again, they may find out one of their services to be just right for the circumstances. The only method to know is to get an appointment.

A third option is to petition the court for relief without the assistance of a credit counselor or a bankruptcy attorney. This is not a good way to solve debt problems unless the person understands the laws governing credit. If a mistake is made it could be even more costly, then the original obligations.

In conclusion, sometimes it is best to debt consolidate. The results are fast and will often save a lot of needless worry and expense. Alternatively, some situations are best left to a bankruptcy attorney. They can help their clients through these difficult times. The third option is a bit more risky, but is cheap.

House approves Senate amended economic stimulus package

Friday, February 8, 2008

The United States Capitol

The United States House of Representatives has passed the bipartisan US$152 billion economic stimulus package that gives one-time rebates to United States citizens, US$600 for individuals or US$1,200 for couples plus US$300 for each child. US$300 checks would be sent to people on low-income including retirees on Social Security which was not included in the original bill backed by President George W. Bush. The plan would begin to decrease rebates for citizens with taxable incomes of US$75,000 for individuals and US$150,000 for couples. The checks would go out to more than a 130 million Americans according to Treasury secretary Henry Paulson.

The House overwhelmingly approved the more broad Senate amended bill which included the low-income portion mentioned above along with provisions that would keep illegal aliens from receiving a rebate check. Despite some opposition from some Congressmen, such as John B. T. Campbell III of California’s 48th congressional district, the plan passed overwhelmingly 380–34.

Campbell called the plan “wealth redistribution” and noted it did not have safeguards to prevent illegals from receiving these rebates and also claimed that stimulus plan would increase the deficit more and noted the cause of the looming recession was because of “credit problems.”

The United States Senate voted hours earlier on the bill which passed in the Senate, 81–16. after having to shed some incentives included by Senate Democrats which caused the bill to fail. Some of the incentives that were left out of the plan in a compromise to gain Republican support were demands for benefits for long-term unemployed workers and stipulation that would allow low-income citizens to pay off heating bills and let home builders pay off losses off the current year against previous tax years.

President Bush approved of the package, noting in a statement, “This plan is robust, broad-based, timely, and it will be effective, this bill will help to stimulate consumer spending and accelerate needed business investment.”

RTÉ’s Eddie Hobbs attracts massive audience

Thursday, August 25, 2005

In Ireland, RTÉ’s new “Rip Off Republic” TV series has attracted a record audience of 667,000 for its second show, making it one of Ireland’s top TV programs. The second show broadcast on Monday 15th August captured 50.5% of all TV viewers in Ireland.

The series which contains four shows broadcast from Dublin City University’s “Helix” centre, aims to expose over pricing and the exploitation of consumers in Ireland. Hosted by financial advisor Eddie Hobbs, the show has attracted huge media commentry, particularly as it has attracted the attention of the governments main party, Fianna Fail.

The main argument against the show has been that it generalises issues and makes exaggerated claims – for example it claimed that restaurants make a 300%+ profit on a typical bottle of wine, leading the viewer to believe that all businesses are making such a profit. This claim has since come under attack by restaurant owners nationwide. Other arguments against the show have stated that while inflation is less than 3%, wage growth is over 6% meaning people are still better off.

The third show will be broadcast on 29th August at 9.30pm on RTÉ One. It will focus on the transport sector in Ireland.

Playbook Practicing

Practicing the plays is fun, and also very important. When you master your part of the play it will strengthen your team and yourself. Rule number one in starting out a new play is following your coach’s instructions. A lot of habits can form in the first couple of practice plays, for this sake it is a good idea to take them slow at the start. As always, when learning a new play don’t hesitate to ask for individual help to master the techniques needed. The last helpful hint that we want you to learn is the power of visualization. Go over the plays in your mind, over and over again. Make your mind work them out and your muscles memorize them even when you sleep!Making and effective Angle TackleBecause not every tackle is direct and head on, it is necessary to set up an angle tackling situations during practice. Set up a simple drill with two players, on as the offense with the ball running in a straight line, the other as the defender running towards him at some angle. As the opponent comes toward the defender he will need to adjust his body position and shorten the angle, put his foot in front of the opponent, and make sure that he put his head in front of the opponent. The tackle is completed as the defender wraps his hands tightly around the opponent, straightens his hips and pushes the opponent to the ground or off sides. Practicing the Hand offDrills practicing fundamentals like an effective hand offs can make the difference between a mediocre team and an excellent one. A simple drill for a hand off is to line up all of your running backs in two lines facing each other in what we will call line A and Line B. The player from line A leaves the line with the football running towards line B. At the same time that the first player leaves player B leaves his line towards player A, as they pass each other in the middle player A hands off the football to player B. Now player B has the ball and will hand off the ball to the next person in Line A who will hand off to the next player in Line B. It should be a constant motion. It is an effective drill to teach handoff skills and help running backs achieve higher accuracy and consistency. Some fundamentals of ball securityA team that prevents fumbles is a team that wins. Nothing is worse for your offensive team then turning it over carelessly to the other team in a fumble. There are four points to protecting the football. The first point is the claw, meaning that your fingers are wrapped over the tip of the football. The second point is making sure that your forearm is wrapped tightly on the outer rim of the football. The third point is securing the other point of the football with your bicep making sure that it is right up against it. Last point is to hold the back of the football right up against the ribcage and as you run keep it high and tight. Practice holding the football and having defensive players try and knock out the football by any means possible. In this way you can practice great defensive moves to force a fumble, and also focus on offensive ball protection.

Sri Lanka accepts ‘One China’ policy

Monday, March 28, 2005

The Sri Lankan government further said, it welcomes growing cross-Straits economic and other exchanges such as the promotion of direct trade, mail, air and shipping links.

British pathologist criticised by General Medical Council

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Dr Freddy Patel, a former British Home Office pathologist, has been criticised by a panel at the General Medical Council (GMC), Britain’s regulatory body for doctors. Dr Patel had concluded that the death of Sally White in 2002, the first victim of Anthony Hardy (the so-called “Camden Ripper”), could have been from natural causes.

The report produced by Dr Patel concluded that Sally White had been having consensual sex in her apartment when she died of a heart attack, in spite of blood stains on her clothing, blood at the scene, damage to Ms White’s liver and bite marks. The GMC panel found that Dr Patel had included inaccurate information on his CV and had shown “deficient professional performance” in the evaluation of the cause of Sally White’s death. They concluded that this investigation was “irresponsible, not of the standard expected of a competent forensic pathologist and liable to bring the medical profession into disrepute”. Dr Patel is currently suspended and the decision of the panel may lead to him being struck off.

The GMC had previously investigated Dr Patel and criticised his investigation of the death of Ian Tomlinson, a newspaper seller who died during the G20 protests in London. He concluded that the death was caused by coronary heart disease; subsequent investigations by other pathologists showed that he had died from internal bleeding caused by a blunt force trauma — an assault by a police officer caught on video. The Director of Public Prosecution noted afterwards that the mistakes in the forensic pathology report by Dr Patel had made it significantly harder to bring the police officer who fatally assaulted Ian Tomlinson to justice. Dr Patel has also been investigated by the GMC for alleged misconduct in the investigation of the deaths of two children.
